Exquisite not-new tones to float into the new week with. Everything from your rattling psych, to your spiritual highs.
Hello, Friends.
The third installment of Luaka Bop’s World Spirituality Classics series is released this week with The Muslim Highlife of Alhaji Waziri Oshomah. Joyous and euphoric highlife sounds, folk tones, brilliant directions in Western pop and the teachings of Islam. Really good energy on this one, Oshomah has led a fascinating life and it really plays out in the music.
Another essential compilation on the Two-Piers label (they who brought us the glorious ‘Pop Psychédélique’) with the new ‘Garage Psychédélique’, a deep dive into Garage Psych and Pzyk Rock sounds from 1965-2019. Thrills-a-minute here, with high octane bangers from The Monks and 13th Floor Elevators through to Thee Oh Sees and Goat.
+ Available on limited double Transparent Lime colour vinyl.
Soul Jazz Records reissue a 50th anniversary edition of Grounation, the hugely revered album of Rastafarian ideology from The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari. A really stirring fusion of jazz, funk and reggae, it might well be the first ever triple reggae LP. A genuine opus.
Marina and the Diamonds’ Electra Heart album receives a ‘Platinum Blonde Edition’ this week, features additional tracks as previously heard on alternate releases of the album. Pressed on limited double Magenta vinyl, it has a really lush mirror board sleeve too.
Originally released in 1998 in Japan-only, Bustin' + Dronin' is a Blur compilation that features remixes of tracks from their 1997 eponymously titled, number one album. Had a super limited RSD pressing a few years back, so nice to have this one back.
Alice in Chains’ second studio album Dirt turns thirty this Thursday (29th) and Columbia have made a limited repress available to celebrate. We sold out on the double Yellow colour vinyl edition, but we do have a few of the equally limited double Black vinyl copies in the racks.
Quite a few other bits just arriving to tell you about, including;
Joni Mitchell’s The Asylum Albums [1972-1975] as a lavish 4CD or 5LP box. The collection features newly remastered versions of For The Roses (1972), Court And Spark (1974), the double live album Miles Of Aisles (1974), and The Hissing Of Summer Lawns (1975).
Wavves’ absolutely glorious King of the Beach gets an anniversary pressing this week on Fat Possum. If memory serves, it was our 2010 No.2 album of the year; it’s a riot! Pretty sure it’s on Tangerine colour vinyl and features the illustrated cat cover.
More amazing colours with Sunn O)))’s Life Metal (on a quite spectacular ‘Galaxy’ colour vinyl pressing) via Southern Lord and Michael Head & The Red Elastic Band’s recent Dear Scott on a limited Blue colour vinyl pressing via Modern Sky and Spacemen 3’s always-essential Playing With Fire on Transparent Yellow colour vinyl via Space Age.
Kranky release the first ever vinyl issue of the one and only record from Adam Wiltzie as The Dead Texan. Beautifully blurred pieces that slowly swell and envelop. Absolutely lush, this one!
Lastly this week, Shake The Feeling is an absolutely scorching collection of outtakes and rarities from Denmark’s Iceage. The set includes non-album tracks (or “misfit children,” as singer Elias Bender Rønnenfelt describes them) recorded between 2015–2021. Such a great band and this collection hints at the different directions they took to arrive at those belting records. Great stuff.
Can’t wait to tell you more, but there will be a Dinked Archive announcement very shortly and it’s really one (or two?) to shout about!
