Best New Reissues

Best New Reissues: Yuji Toriyama, Elton John, David Sylvian, Saharan WhatsApp, Neneh Cherry and Portico Quartet.

And now, from Devon, we bring you news of all the week's best new reissues.

Hello, Friends.

Welcome to the new week.

Any of you who look at our social channels will have seen (amongst the cat photos) that we've been pretty jazzed up about Yuji Toriyama's Choice Works 1982-1985 reissue on the Time Capsule label. The collection was originally compiled and released in 2018 and quickly sold out. Now back in print (no digital, only available on 45rpm loud cut 12" vinyl) it really is a treat; beautifully warm fusion with the producer and guitarist touching on electro-pop, boogie, jazz and ambient. Such great energy.

The Sahel Sounds label ran a superb project in 2020 with digital EPs appearing on BandCamp after artists and musicians had recorded tracks on cellphones and sent them over the popular mobile app WhatsApp. Now compiled for physical release as Music from Saharan WhatsApp, it features live performances by some of the most exciting acts in the Sahel playing music, including Nigerién techno, wedding rock, Woodabe guitar, WZN, traditional music, Mandingue music, and more.

Elton John's fantastic Madman Across The Water get's a 50th anniversary edition. His fourth studio LP (fourth in two years, a prolific rate that would see a further nine albums in seven years) was a massive breakthrough in the USA, with Levon and Tiny Dancer getting tons of radio play. Deluxe editions and an indie exclusive pressing on a very cool-looking Blue and White pinwheel colour record.

Elton John - Madman Across The Water [50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition]

Real World reissue a tenth anniversary edition of Portico Quartet's superb eponymous LP. Such lush use of electronic flourishes, it still sounds really fresh.

+ Indie 2LPs are pressed on purple and green vinyl - both LPs have an etched D-side.

The Versions is a 10-track album featuring Neneh Cherry reworks from artists that have a personal connection to the artist and her music. Features; Robyn, Sudan Archives, Jamilia Woods, Anohni, Sia, Greentea Peng and more.

Grönland Records reissue David Sylvian's Sleepwalkers, a compilation of non-album works featuring collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Steve Jansen, Fennesz and more.

Music from Saharan WhatsApp

A couple of really fantastic soundtracks this week too, with Blanck Mass' Ted K on Sacred Bones Records and Nick Cave & Warren Ellis combining for La Panthere Des Neiges on Invada. Both releases have limited vinyl formats.

The Mars Volta reissue series continues with Landscape Tantrums,  the first attempt at recording the music that would become De-Loused In The Comatorium. Lost in the vaults for years, this is really great.

On the stereo as we type, Strut deliver the first ever reissue of an essential lost classic from the Black Fire catalogue with Wayne Davis’ powerful, self-titled gospel-soul album from 1976. Pretty special stuff, this.

Lastly today (and new, not not-new), it's going to be a full few days for Dinked Editions. We announced this morning that Rachael Dadd is the latest artist to be welcomed into the double-Dinked Edition fold with her lush new Kaleidoscope album. Really nice package and not many in the run, so don't miss out. That is No. 203, expect 204 and 205 to follow shortly!
