Record of the Month July 2018; Dirty Projectors - Lamp Lit Prose

Record of the Month July 2018; Dirty Projectors - Lamp Lit Prose

July's Record of the Month is the ludicrously addictive Lamp Lit Prose from Dirty Projectors.

We adore this band, but when they constantly deliver such thrilling work it's no wonder why. This, their eighth studio album, is produced by the main man Dave Longstreth at his studio Ivo Shandor in Los Angeles and features (beautifully balanced) guest appearances from Syd, Empress Of, Amber Mark, Haim, Rostam Robin Pecknold and Dear Nora alongside the longtime DPs’ rhythm section Nat Baldwin and Mike Johnson. It arrives a little over a year after their previous self-titled LP and is very much the yang to its yin.. or yin to its yang. The self-titled was about recovering and heartbreak whereas Lamp Lit Prose feels like a celebration of life, pop, colours and sounds. The production is stunning and the guests add to the excitement of the magic rather than standing out too much (besides Amber Mark on I feel Energy who is just so bada$$ you can't help but swoon... of god, the harmonies on You’re The One are nuts too).

The band will never sound the same as when Amber Coffman and Angel Deradoorian threw those quite remarkable harmonies around, but perhaps without the instantly recognisable blasts and trills, Longstreth has been forced to find new hooks to fill those formidable shadows. Lamp Lit Prose is the first time we are thrilled with what is here rather than greaving what is not. Or are we just flapping on as we're such fans.. who knows?

Buy this LP, it's the party you need right now.
