Records of the Week: Harp, Muriel Grossmann, Czarface, Peter Gabriel, Ancient Infinity Orchestra and Nick Cave & Warren Ellis.

Winter wooze, spiritual Jazz, studio magnificence and hip-hop supervillains.

Well folks, eleven out of the twelfth months are done, tomorrow’s New Music Friday kicks off December and it’s very much spearheaded by the debut Harp record, Albion. We’re listening to it now with - what can technically constitute snow - gently landing on the windows, it’s quite the vibe. It’s our Record of the Month for December and you can read more about it here.

We have a proper soother from Third Man Records this week, with Austrian saxophonist and composer Muriel Grossmann releasing the sublime Devotion. There is a real laid-back groove to the instrumentation and the way she weaves in and out of it with spiritual tones is really special stuff. Strong and groovin’ vibes.

+ Available on limited double Orange / Silver vinyl.

Hip-Hop supergroup Czarface (7L & Esoteric and Wu-Tang Clan’s Inspectah Deck) return on Silver Age records with the new Czartificial Intelligence. There is a really great drive with lush guitar tones and lots of old production throwbacks. Might be a Speak and Spell cameo too! Record of the Week.

+ Available on limited Green colour vinyl.

Australian Carnage is a live recording of Nick Cave & Warren Ellis at the Sydney Opera House as part of their 2022 set of Australian dates. It is centred around the acclaimed Carnage album, but there are plenty of cuts from the The Bad Seeds catalogue too. Knowing how much they were loving it makes for a pretty special performance.

A huge return for Peter Gabriel this week, with i/o, his first new LP in twenty years. The work and the wait is really worth it, it’s huge, with guests and choirs throughout. All twelve tracks are available in two different stereo mixes; the Bright-Side Mix, handled by Mark ‘Spike’ Stent, and the Dark-Side Mix, as reshaped by Tchad Blake.

Rivers Of Light is the Gondwana Records debut from the Leeds-based Ancient Infinity Orchestra, a fourteen-member jazz ensemble led by double-bassist and composer Ozzy Moysey. Huge and full, but also with plenty of moments of intimacy and space too to really move through the sonic gears.

Lastly, we also have the wild new LP from composer Charlemagne Palestine and a very limited 7” single from Minor Threat! A total vault-find via Dischord and very exciting it is too!

Excellent reissues this new week too, with Shack’s iconic Here’s Tom With The Weather, Los Campesinos!, tons of killer Jazz reissues and Earth’s spectacular Primitive And Deadly.
