Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Madmess, Irreversible Entanglements, My Morning Jacket, Beach Fossils and John Dwyer in full-flight!

Quite possibly for the last time this year, it’s Records of the Week!

Hello, Friends.

Record of the Week at Drift is Gong Splat, the collaborative forces of John Dwyer, Ryan Sawyer, Wilder Zoby & Andres Renteria. My word, it's such a lush vibe, sonic experimentalism without needless pondering. It's the latest in the series of John Dwyer's (OSEES frontman) lock down improvisations with friends. Recorded at Stu-Stu-Studio by John Dwyer in the peak of dope smoke lock down, the art (by Dan Lean) is lush and we have a limited 'Gold with blue, yellow and purple splatter' vinyl pressing. Don't over think it. Drop the needle.

Rebirth is full of huge, hazy clouds of stoner riffs from the Portuguese trio Madmess. We were stoked to bring you a limited Dinked Edition (last few copies online now), a dark and delicious package that includes;

+ Turquoise marble LP
+ Signed fold out 24" x 12" art print
+ Gatefold sleeve with spot gloss finish
+ Hand-numbered sleeve
+ Limited Edition of 500

They really do weave dark magic, grooves to get locked into with harsh noises and those massive riffs.

Madmess

Open The Gates is the third LP from Philadelphia-based free jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements. A raw and punk sort of jazz, but with really addictive energy, it's so propulsive.

+ Indie LPs are pressed on 'Sands of Time' colour vinyl.

Inspired by a love of artists such as Bill Evans, Lester Young, Chet Baker and Vince Guaraldi, Dustin Payseur reimagines some of his greatest hits from the Beach Fossils catalogue alongside a group of formally trained jazz musicians with The Other Side Of Life: Piano Ballads. These sort of projects are normally 'interesting at best', but there are some glorious moments here.

+ Limited Blue vinyl pressing.

As Rolling Stone said, My Morning Jacket are, "One of the greatest live bands of their generation". ATO release the band's Live 2015 album, taped during 2015's The Waterfall tour.

+ Available exclusively on white vinyl, housed in a 3LP gatefold jacket.

Johnny Marr releases the second part of his Fever Dreams project with EP2. Four new tracks that make up the second quarter of Marr’s forthcoming double album, ‘Fever Dreams Pts 1-4’.

+ Pressed on very limited edition 12” Transparent Violet colour vinyl.

Warpaint's jennylee (Jenny Lee Lindburg) releases a super limited 7" of new tracks Stop Speaking / In Awe Of. Really good stuff, we want more!

Saint Etienne release a Christmas single called Her Winter Coat. The track features on a 4 track CD EP of brand new recordings.

Some excellent restocks for your attention. Little Simz's Sometimes I Might be Introvert is back on Milky Clear vinyl and will not last long. Yasmin Williams' absolutely stunning Urban Driftwood is back on wax and again, will not last long. A 2021 pressing (just) of Strawberry Guy's Taking My Time To Be on Cream vinyl.

Also just taken stock of long late running vinyl editions, with; Josienne Clarke's A Small Unknowable ThingSleigh Bells' TexisTeleman's Sweet Morning EP, and the Tricky curated Lonely Guest.

* Yes, we will of course be joining you tomorrow to talk about Not-New records, with; Nancy Sinatra, Little Roy, F*cked Up, Bardo Pond, The Mars Volta, The Band, Kings Of Convenience, Molchat Doma and more...
