In Times New Roman… is the richly dark eighth studio LP from Queens Of The Stone Age. It’s quite an evolution, and it’s actually a huge success in that they manage to still bring the ripping riffs and hurtle that make them sound like themselves. But sonically, there is more here than ever before and the way that Josh Homme uses his voice is a big departure. Instant gratification and a lot for the repeat listens too!

Off Planet is the spangling return of Django Django and it is EXACTLY what this little burst of hot weather needed. The production is impeccable, looking backwards through forty years of dance music tones like magpies and creating a vivid and euphoric set of 2023 bangers. The guest appearances are really well measured, with Rebecca Self Esteem sounding absolutely iconic on ‘Complete Me’ and Jack Peñate brings an understated confidence to ‘Not Time’ too amongst many fine turns. Their fifth album is a twenty-one track goliath in four parts, but it absolutely flies by. Ambitious and consistently flowing, with warped takes on afrobeat, hip hop and psychedelia against the beats. Record of the Week and a proper joy.

Mexican duo Lorelle Meets The Obsolete return on Sonic Cathedral with the muscular new Datura LP. Dark, bass-heavy production with Jace Lasek of The Besnard Lakes really gives this one a fever-dream sort of hypnosis, it’s quite the vibe. We sold out of our Dinked Edition (remember, sign up for notifications just in case!) but we have a real nice Blue vinyl pressing in stock.

Léa Sen releases the second part of her You Of Now EP this week on Partisan. Her voice is really special stuff. It’s mostly at a sort of hushed whisper, but when she holds notes you really hear the depth and tone. Another hugely impressive set and very much one to watch.

Sus Dog is the return of electronic icon Clark with his most vocal focused LP to date. Explaining the inspiration he commented; "I kept on thinking what would it sound like if The Beach Boys took MDMA and made a rave record" - Wonder no more! It’s propulsive stuff and the synth tones sound pretty incredible. Executive produced by Thom Yorke, this one has such a lot going on and plenty of surprises. Highly recommended.

Yawning Abyss is the second collaborative album from Creep Show, the combined forces of Wrangler and John Grant. Experimental synth bangers with some brilliantly deranged and experimental directions. Nowhere as dark as their debut and really fun in places, there is more of a knowing wink to the cinematics and sinister synth tones. Very much a group effort, but John Grant’s voice sounds absolutely wonderful out in front.

Achilles Was A Hound Dog is the first new album in a decade from Ralfe Band. We’re long time fans, so are delighted about this and it’s well worth the wait. Instrumentals and wonky ballads with understated grace. Emma Faulkner’s voice adds another dimension alongside other guests.

Ben Howard releases his fifth album this week, Is It? The swirling new Bullion-produced set. Mid eighties high pop production all chopped and shopped, it really has found its own space.

Enigmatic Society is the next offering from the multi-faceted, Grammy-nominated supergroup Dinner Party, featuring Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington and 9th Wonder, with additional help vocalists Phoelix, Arin Ray, Ant Clemons, Tank and producers Sounwave, Hi-Tek and Trevor Lawrence Jr.

Backslider is the new EP from Pigeon. A swaggering and band-lead take on disco with Guinean singer Falle Nioke very much leading proceedings. Afro-rock strutting with big energy, style and really great songs. As ever, we want more!

Also this week; Fester is the new EP from the much-hyped London art rock band Legss. Really great clatter. The Flaming Lips have just announced the very limited Hypnotist EP, full of trips. Meg Duffy returns as Hand Habits with Sugar The Bruise on Fat Possum, including a limited Milky Clear vinyl pressing. Also, Waves, a limited vinyl run of the textural and spacious debut from instrumental duo Ben Chansy & Rick Tomlinson

Lastly, today, Anna St. Louis returns with In The Air, her gorgeous second full length album on the Woodsist records imprint, Mare. Her voice sounds amazing, full of heart and emotion without ever pushing it. Sonically there is plenty of country tone, but in such an unfussy way. It’s a proper treat. CD copies are here now, LP copies due in a few weeks and very much worth ordering now.
