Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Vieux Farka Touré & Khruangbin, Makaya McCraven, Tim Burgess, DITZ, The Comet Is Coming, Beth Orton and FKA twigs.

Well, this one is going to go down as the biggest ever week for new releases. No doubt.

Hello, Friends.

Our Record of the Week is a stellar collaboration that sees Khruangbin and Vieux Farka Touré pay tribute to the great Ali Farka Touré with a new album called ‘Ali’. It’s one of those rare occasions where both parties do what you’d expect them to do and it all just locks in like a jigsaw to form something new. In the true Ali spirit, it has a great, live energy to it, with everything feeling spontaneous (apparently the recording largely was). Slow-burning, fun jams, pensive, dubbed-out meditations and plenty of haze in between.

+ Available as on Indie Exclusive Jade colour vinyl.

In These Times is the phenomenally crafted new LP from jazz vanguard and Drift hero, Makaya McCraven. It has been in the works for a long time, recorded at multiple studios and spaces before McCraven interwove the performances with his stunning beat-making. With contributions from over a dozen musicians and creative partners from his tight-knit circle of collaborators – including Jeff Parker, Junius Paul, Brandee Younger, Joel Ross, and Marquis Hill – it is powerful and inspiring music that sounds not very much like anything else at all. Special stuff.

+ Available as on Indie Exclusive White colour vinyl.

Makaya McCraven - In These Times

Together is the fourth studio LP from San Jose-formed trio Duster, and I have to be honest: it has absolutely knocked us sideways. Slow, distorted, sad music that has such thick production, you can almost wear it like a shawl. Massively evocative and a brilliantly controlled pace throughout.

+ Available as on Exclusive ‘Sad Boy Blue’ vinyl.

Songwriter, Charlatan, author and party-leader Tim Burgess returns with his sixth solo album, Typical Music. Well, it’s not really solo, he has a fantastic band around him and collectively they really dive into some experimental waters here, which is a real treat. The twenty-two song album is a joyous, melodic and exuberant set, with Burgess really shining at the front as the idiosyncratic narrator.

+ Available as a limited Dinked Edition.

+ Available as on Transparent Red / Blue colour vinyl.

The Great Regression is the debut LP from Brighton-based, five-piece band DITZ and it is absolutely one of the year's most thrilling new albums. Dark and dangerous music, it is just so primal. Finding new space in punk is never easy but they really have, the sonic shifts between what everyone is doing is just amazing. We had them play live in Totnes this year for Sea Change back in May and they were an absolute force of nature to behold.

+ Available as a limited Dinked Edition.

+ Available on Pink colour vinyl.

At long last, FKA twig's CAPRISONGS mixtape is pressed to wax! Features guest appearances from The Weeknd, Jorja Smith, Pa Salieu, Rema, Shygirl, Unknown T and Daniel Caesar as well as a host of twigs’ close friends and community. It is such a shapeshifter, taking in choral sounds, pin-sharp beats and her assured whisper.

+ Available as on Indie Exclusive Glow in the Dark vinyl.

King Shabaka, Danalogue and Betamax return as The Comet Is Coming with HYPER-DIMENSIONAL EXPANSION BEAM, their second album for the Impulse! Label. Lots of lush, propulsive energy; but somehow lighter than you’d expect them. That’s not to say that there aren’t moments of high adrenaline and Shabaka has so much space to both float transcendentally and also to scream.

+ Available as on Indie Exclusive Orange vinyl.

Beth Orton - Weather Alive

Weather Alive is the first new album from English singer-songwriter Beth Orton in six years and it is a slow-burning treat. Her voice, as you’d well expect, sounds glorious; frail but graceful and so honest. It’s like you’re being sung to, individually. As the nights turn more Autumnal, god only knows how often we’ll be playing this one.

+ Available as on Indie Exclusive Clear vinyl.
+ Order the LP now for a signed 12” art card.

The cult artist Alex G has to be one of this generation’s most prolific and consistently inventive songwriters. HIs latest LP - God Save The Animals - has all of his charm, wit and idiosyncrasies in abundance, but the added sparkle to the production really makes this a sweetie. Really lush.

+ Available as on Indie Exclusive Clear colour vinyl.

Exister is the fifth studio LP from The Soft Moon, aka Berlin-based, American singer-songwriter Luis Vasquez. His voice sounds amazing, dramatic but intimate across the vast sonics, beats and post-punking synths.

+ Available as on Indie Exclusive Crystal Clear colour vinyl.

Highgrade is a full reworking of the ten tracks on Tirzah’s acclaimed second album Colourgrade. Includes Actress, Wulu, Lafawndah, Loraine James and more.

Music For Animals is a sublime and tranquil new set from Nils Frahm. Expansive, pensive and genuinely epic across a 2CD and 4LP set.

Editors return with the synth-heavy EBM album. The band have also added composer and producer Blanck Mass to their line-up as a full member (you did just read that) and there certainly is some new darkness to the shadows here.

+ Available as on Indie Exclusive double Orange colour vinyl.

The previously Mercury Prize-nominated Sports Team return with new album Gulp!

+ Available as on Indie Exclusive Green colour vinyl.

Guitar Music is the much anticipated debut album from Liverpool four-piece Courting.

Two years in the making, Kosmik Musik is a collaboration between artist Joe Currie, writer Ben Wheatley and Beak>. A limited soundtrack released via Invada on 10” vinyl.

Songwriter Cass McCombs’ most-recent album Heartmind finally gets a vinyl pressing this week. His voice sounds lush, some really gorgeous moments.

It’s an Italians Do It Better double this week with the cinematic Midnight Train from Jorja Chalmers, and Glüme’s deliciously dreamy The Internet. Both drenched in synth-wave noir.
