Best New Reissues

Songs: Ohia, Galaxie 500 and Majestic Arrows.

A svelte triple of releases that couldn’t be more unalike, but all getting much love over here.

We start this new week with pure magic. Long out-of-print, Impala is the second LP from Jason Molina’s Songs: Ohia, originally released on Happy Go Lucky records back in 1998. Raw and far from easy going, this is a crucial early testament to the profound songwriting of the man. Recorded solely by Molina and collaborator Geof Comings, the stripped-back nature of the set really puts his hard-learned lyrics into sharp focus. Full of potent and poignant moments about heartache and loss. Man, it really is a stunner.

This 2025 pressing includes a remastered demo of ‘Tess’ that was originally captured during recording sessions for Impala.

Following last year’s glorious Uncollected Noise New York '88-'90 release, Silver Current Records have again gone into the Galaxie 500 vaults for the equally thrilling CBGB 12.13.88. The recording captures the band as they were truly on the ascent, proto-slowcore and maudlin dream pop hazes. This set is way more unadorned and pensive than the epic walls of noise on the Uncollected release. Previously only available via bootlegs, it shows the dexterity of the trio, it’s a bit like this is the nexus of all the noise when the waves are crashing out of sight. Or sound? Bloody great.

+ Available on limited Milky Clear vinyl.

Lastly already, the heads at Numero release The Magic of the Majestic Arrows, the rarest Chicago sweet soul in print for the first time in half a century. The Majestic Arrows were a four-piece vocal harmony group from Chicago put together by Bandit records owner and producer Arrow Brown. Mid-tempo soul through to more funky soul, switching between male and female vocals throughout. This one is bringing some real nice energy to the shop.

+ Available on limited ‘Another Blue Sky’ vinyl.
