Water From Your Eyes - It’s A Beautiful Place

August’s Record of the Month is It’s A Beautiful Place, the new LP from New York art rock duo Water From Your Eyes.

Six albums into their career, the main takeaway with New York-based Water From Your Eyes is to very much expect the unexpected. From experimental shoegaze sounds, dream-pop hues, menacing industrial synths, long-form textural experimentations and straight-up noisescapes, they have always followed the wind and traversed a wild base of genres and styles with a lot of dexterity. It’s A Beautiful Place certainly follows that form, with delicious earworm melodies that bubble through the changes of pace and timbre, all of this bookended between the opening and closing tracks One Small Step and For Mankind respectively, two sci-fi-esque ambient headspaces to really get your frontal lobe opened up.

“We wanted to present a wide range of styles in a way that acknowledges everything’s just a tiny blip.” - Nate Amos

But, for all of the sonic influences in the mix, none of the album’s changes in direction feel knee-jerk, with a guitar-forward sound that really binds everything together. In that way, it is also one of the duo’s most accessible releases to date. Recorded and produced in Amos’s bedroom but shaped around the dynamics of a full-blooded live group, this truly is the least ‘bedroom-sounding’ record that we’ve ever heard. A tapestry of ideas and reverberations that takes a trip, from the melancholic and pensive, to just basking in the beauty of small things. Really engaging stuff.
