Prime cut Pixies BBC jams, proper Brainfeeders, Brian Jones and serious noir chic!
Our week started off with the excellent new Pixies Live At The BBC compilation on 4AD. The takes were recorded across six sessions at the BBC between 1988 and 1991, five times for John Peel and one for Mark Goodier. Black Francis, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering are in really great form, with some mellow bangers and some pure screamers (the Honey Pie cover is especially thrashed out). It was only previously available on CD, with these new ‘luxe 3LP and 2CD editions now presented in chronological order. The sleeve has also been brilliantly reimagined by Chris Bigg, who pays loving tribute to the band’s late-visual director Vaughan Oliver, using unseen archival Pixies imagery by long-time collaborator Simon Larbalestier.
Domino have made a one-off pressing of Buzzcocks’ essential singles collection Singles Going Steady to celebrate its 45th Anniversary. We played it too much over the weekend and sold them all, but we’re desperately trying to cop some more, so keep an eye on the website for a restock of the limited Orange vinyl ASAP. It’s the sort of record that every house should own.
It’s always good on Brainfeeder, but this is REALLY GOOD on Brainfeeder. Tokyo based musician, producer and singer-songwriter Hakushi Hasegawa makes the most explosive music, an absolute whirlwind of beats, jazz and J-Pop against some pastoral prettiness too! We have reissues of their 2018 debut release Somoku Hodo and 2019 full debut Air Ni Ni album.
Both pressed on vinyl for the first time, both on pretty colours and both just the most densely packed sonic workout we’ve been through in ages. Glorious.
A couple of mid-sixties bangers from the The Rolling Stones archives this week, with both UK and USA pressings of Out Of Our Heads, the trippy Their Satanic Majesties Request and the live LP Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out. Rock ‘n’ roll through to mind expansion. Guys, Brian Jones. Amiright?
Also this week; we have a few of the Get on Down 2023 pressing of Jurassic 5’s Quality Control. The Xmal Deutschland Early Singles comp on Sacred Bones Records. Mute bring us a 25th Anniversary pressing of Looper’s really yummy Up a Tree. Really lush lo-fi pop from the Scottish underground.
Numero have a double this week from the Louis Wayne Moody Pictures vault, with the previously unissued soundtracks You’re Not From Around Here and They Move In The Night. Such great vibes, rich in reverb and sombre-surfy tremolo. Made us all want to check out the flicks.
Lastly this week, a more recent reissue with Dry Cleaning’s riotous Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks + Sweet Princess EPs back on wax. As many of you will recall, we pressed up the pair as an exclusive Dinked Edition back in October 2019 and they have remained mostly unavailable since. A great band who have truly expanded, but listening back to those first cuts, it’s a reminder of why we all went so mad for them. Limited Transparent Blue vinyl and cassettes up for grabs, plus a CD pressing for the first time. (we think?)
