A couple of truly epic returns, a couple of truly sizzling Dinked Editions and some genuine thrillers. We are stacked!
You wait and you wait, and when it arrives it is glorious. It really is! More is the first album in 24 years from the iconic Pulp and it very much sounds like Pulp. They have aged (gracefully) and it feels like an album where experience has given them a unique position to comment on anything and everything with authenticity and all of the charm and wryness that you’d expect. It has some bangers, lots of sweet moments and a revitalised energy throughout. On announcement they said that “This is the best that we can do.” - It does feel like they put it all onto the tape.
+ Available on exclusive 'Blue Sky Thinking' colour vinyl.
+ Available on limited 'Theresa' Green colour vinyl.
Lotus is the sixth studio LP from Mercury Prize winning rapper, Little Simz. The album arrives in the shadows of a pretty major fall out with longstanding producer InFlo and there is real fury across the album, especially in the more introspective moments (which are hard going). Her voice sounds amazing, and sonically she has found some genuinely new space, which is as thrilling as when she first landed. Some of the skits break the flow, but maybe that's fine? When she roars she roars!
+ Available on exclusive double Electric Pink colour vinyl.
I'll Be Waving As You Drive Away is the new album from Texas-born and Oklahoma City-based fingerstyle guitarist Hayden Pedigo and it is proper magic. We’ve had a test pressing of this one for a little while and we’ve damn near worn a hole in it, a sublime set of cosmic American Country. Apparently the title is based on a “pretty devastating” episode of Little House on the Prairie from 1978… which makes the whole thing even more engrossing.
Honestly now, a beautiful record of guitar-based meditations. Instant classic.
+ Pressed on "Silverado Brown" vinyl.
+ We have some lush A3 posters, come pick one up. We can fold one into mail order too.
Ripped and Torn is the long awaited debut LP from Chicago trio Lifeguard and it is another of this wild week’s absolute belters. Admittedly it is very us, but we’ve all been knocked absolutely sideways by this one, a dark and urgent set of experimental guitar raspers. Touches of punk, some lush layers of hooks and flashes of weird dubby production too. It really is a proper stand out. We’re a bit totally obsessed.
+ We have an extremely limited White vinyl pressing.
Composer and multi-instrumentalist Ben Lamar Gay releases the all-new Yowzers on International Anthem Recording Co. and it is another really special one. He explains the title; “a word and a sound that came to mind while observing the intersection of humor and horror in our present reality.” They really nail the duality, dark and swirling and equally gorgeous too. Such an immersive listening experience.
+ Available on limited Purple colour vinyl.
The Dinked Double™. We have announced three forthcoming gems this week from Water From Your Eyes, James Yorkston and Friends and Gwenifer Raymond, but now attention turns to Friday’s new release racks.
Firstly, Richmond-born, Chicago-based rapper McKinley Dixon returns with the dazzling Magic, Alive! We went pretty hard for his Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!? album a couple of years back, and this latest outing is even more weighted on his (fantastic) voice, with rich and swirling production across a wide base of tones. It is really, really good.
The Dinked Edition is long sold out, but we do have a Neon Orange vinyl pressing in good supply.
Trash Classic is the frantic and frenetic return of LA-based psych-punk Frankie & The Witch Fingers and it is a riot. They described it as “a sewer-slick fusion of proto-punk venom, fractured new wave, and industrial grime.”... There is little we can add to articulate it better, but we can assure that the energy keeps pumping throughout.
The Dinked Edition looks amazing, the very last few are in stock now!
The most-excellent Lucy Gooch makes her full debut this week via Fire Records with Desert Window. Man, she really creates moods. Huge swirling synth workouts with her gorgeous and dreamy vocals floating in and out of other natural timbres and sounds. For all its vastness, there is such intimacy in her whispers. Quite magical stuff, highly recommended.
+ Available on limited Marble colour vinyl with a limited print.
Also this week; American hardcore punks Turnstile return with the massive Never Enough. Dark Harvest is the fourth studio album from Nick Mulvey, released via his own Supernatural Records. Manchester-based Holy Scum release the gnarled All We Have Is Never on Rocket Recordings. still, there is the sea is the gorgeous debut album from Canadian composer and singer Ambre Ciel. We’re also shortly due Death In Vegas’ Death Mask, which we’re pretty excited about. We’ll say so when it lands.
Lastly today, Kapaim is 100-percent-good-vibes-guaranteed from Middle Eastern psychedelia trailblazers Ouzo Bazooka. Anatolian guitar licks, gritty soul energy and a mix of the traditional and the out-there for some proper long-winding groovers. We like this one a lot.
+ Pressed on Black & Gold Splatter vinyl.
The week’s Best New Reissues will be including; Super Djata Band, Pete Shelley, Venetian Snares and Sarah Davachi.
