Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Raze Regal & White Denim Inc., O., Smoke DZA and Flying Lotus, Meadow Meadow, Ghost Woman and HONESTY.

Short and sweet late November bangers, with rock 'n' roll soul, fuzzed out sonics and other glorious rattles.

Our Record of the Week for the last time in this bountiful November is an absolute scorcher from Raze Regal and the forces of White Denim Inc. Man alive, this one really is a rich trip through garage rock ‘n’ roll and vintage soul vibes with such a lightness of touch. Raze Regal (formally of the excellent The Once and Future Band) and White Denim’s James Petralli became friends and neighbours and just kept swapping ideas, including a varying cast of guests to create this warm and funking set. Honestly, great vibes. Highly recommended.

SLICE is the new 4-track EP from London-based sax and drum duo O. Man, another scorcher; deep and rasping drives with frenetic drums that keeps the pace changing throughout. Speedy Wunderground are always pretty essential, but this is extra essential, bringing the heat to a cold Thursday over here.

O. The Band

Flying Objects is the new collaborative project from heavyweights Smoke DZA and Flying Lotus. A really lush juxtaposition of speed, with Smoke DZA in a driving flow and Lotus keeping it woozy on production. Also features guest contributions from Conway the Machine, Black Thought and Estelle.

You Are So Alive is the debut LP from Meadow Meadow, the new project from Peter Darlington and James Green, who spent the last half-decade or so touring extensively together in Spring King. It is so full of texture, a brilliantly mixed collection of songs that all slowly build and evolve. Subtle stuff, there is such a lot here for repeat listens.

Worth also flagging that the band will be playing live for us next February. More info.

+ Available on limited Transparent and Green splatter vinyl.

Hindsight Is 50/50 is the second release of the year (it’s actually the third LP in eighteen months!) from multi-instrumentalist Evan Uschenko’s Ghost Woman project. Still routed in rich guitar tones, this one is a little darker than its predecessors with big reverbs and haze.

+ Available in Indie Exclusive White Colour Vinyl.

Drift Record Shop

Abstract Concrete is the self-titled release from Charles Hayward’s (This Heat) new project. Avant-pop vibes with such character and weird, wonky turns. The complexity is dazzling and the groove is enthralling. It’s a limited edition and the production on this one is lush, with a very cool little die cut window on the sleeve!

Fronzoli is the new sixth LP from Australian psych-rock five-piece Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. Noodling guitars and flickering electronics with other hot sounding tones.

+ Available on ‘Sea Blue Splatter’ vinyl.
+ Available on ‘Dolphin Splash Down’ colour vinyl.

Lastly this week, a very cool release on Partisan Records with the much-hyped Leeds-based HONESTY releasing WHERE R U EP. Sparky and evolving guitar music, really inventive stuff. It is a pressing of just 400 copies, with each edition in a hand printed white sleeve, each copy being unique. One to watch and this is not one to miss out on.

Tomorrow is Black Friday and we did cop a few of the exclusives, we’ll do a little run down in the morning. Reissues this week are vast and plentiful, with; Kate Bush, A Tribe Called Quest, The Haxan Cloak, John Coltrane, Abbey Lincoln and the utterly glorious ‘Wonders Of The Underwater World’ from Jezz Woodroffe.
