Description

Wes Anderson asked Jarvis Cocker to record a new version of “Aline” for his new film The French Dispatch. The French pop hit from 1965, “Aline” was originally performed and made famous by Christophe. The song appears in a critical scene in The French Dispatch, the character Tip Top appears on a poster in the café where the revolutionary youth of Paris congregate, while the song plays on the jukebox.

Anderson and Cocker decided to collaborate on an entire album of French material from the same period, songs originally made notable by the likes of Françoise Hardy, Serge Gainsburg, Jacques Dutroc and others. And with this, the album named after Tip Top is here.

"Here we find a loving, stylish tribute that, like Seu Jorge’s David Bowie covers for The Life Aquatic, is distinct enough to become its own thing, exploring this weirdly contradictory world of pop, traditionally bright but with an often revolutionary, seedy edge, with an affection that never tips over into slavish reverence."

Drift Recommends

Alongside a weekly playlist of new and old tracks (tune in via the news section), all of the Drift staff also contribute to a weekly 'Drift Recommends' playlist.

Updated every Friday, it's full of new tracks that we love, absolute bangers that have popped back into our heads and all sorts of other weird avenues. It is supposed to sound a little bit like that feeling of walking through the door at Drift.
