SUMS is the collaborative project of French electronic producer Kangding Ray and Mogwai multi-instrumentalist Barry Burns.

Berlin Atonal Recordings conceived this project, giving the musicians carte blanche to develop a new group that would bring together different elements of both Kangding Ray and Barry Burns’ musical traditions. With the addition of drumming savant Merlin Ettore, Ray and Burns devised a musical world that blended post-rock soundscapes and structures, using the sound-language of contemporary techno and experimental electronic music.

After a debut performance in 2013, the group took the project into the studio. Working with a range of instruments over a two-year period, SUMS began to produce tracks that achieved an organic fusion of spatial electronics and rousing post-rock sounds, seamlessly blending the best of both Mogwai and Kangding Ray. SUMS – SUMS is the first release from this new phase of the project

Drift Recommends

Alongside a weekly playlist of new and old tracks (tune in via the news section), all of the Drift staff also contribute to a weekly 'Drift Recommends' playlist.

Updated every Friday, it's full of new tracks that we love, absolute bangers that have popped back into our heads and all sorts of other weird avenues. It is supposed to sound a little bit like that feeling of walking through the door at Drift.
