Description

Another fascinating tale from Folklore Tapes, shifting their focus this time to the phenomenon of English Fairy Lore. Even before the Cottingley Fairies caused one of the greatest photographic scandals nearly a hundred years ago, fairies have maintained a fairly versatile role within popular culture. Sure, you have the obvious mascots of childhood lore in Tinkerbell and the Fairy Godmother, but considering some believe that fairies have been flitting about in plain sight before the dawn of man, there are far more nuanced legends to pull from.

Hand numbered copies.

It’s in this rich history where we find Folklore Tapes excavating with their latest compilation, Swifter Than The Moon's Sphere. Described as an open-ended research project unravelling the myths, mysteries, magic and strange phenomena of Great Britain’s old counties, Folklore pairs their findings with experimental musical reinterpretations in an effort to rekindle the public’s interest on the subject. With Swifter, Folklore once again enlists an eclectic assortment of artists to examine its mythological subject with the utmost reverence, pairing orchestral pieces with spoken word and experimental soundscapes to help illustrate the scope of fairy history.

Swifter opens on a modern classical note thanks to gorgeous pieces from The Funz on ‘Emain Ablach to Avalon’ and Humberstone's ‘Swinging Lamps in Starlit Globes,’ but true to its subject, this compilation doesn’t stay in one place for very long. A few tracks later, Tragic Magic conjures a rustic hymn to a plant believed to deter fairy mischief on ‘Rowan Ash and Red Thread’ before pivoting to a synthesized swarm of sounds on Mary & David’s ‘Lob of Spirits.’ Coupled with a 30-page booklet of artist research, notes, illustrations, and an essay by Jez Winship, Swifter is a dizzying informational overload aimed to captivate fairy obsessives and the casually curious alike.
