Eric Chenaux has emerged as one of the most distinctive, innovative and original voices in what might be called avant-garde balladry. Skullsplitter (out next month on Constellation) has moments of fragile longing over figurative piano shapes and drawn out and destructive textures. Creative, rich and partially improvised, it's really good and very powerful stuff.
