Big voices, sonic trips and epic returns. The stereo is cooking folks.

You all know how much we love Katy J Pearson’s voice, so you will not be shocked in the slightest to hear that we really like her new LP - Someday, Now - and it is our Record of the Week. The voice is still the voice, but the album’s sonic shifts through new timbres gives it so many more dimensions. Rich and swooning, but pop sensitive and diverse whilst still sounding coherent. It’s dead good!

The week’s biggest hitter is In Waves, the long, long-awaited return of Jamie xx with some amazing guest spots. Without lacking any smartness or depth, this one is just so fun. A proper soundtrack to a proper night out, from the pounding to the slow glimmer of the sun rising. Includes Robyn, The Avalanches, Kelsey Lu, John Glacier and Panda Bear, Oona Doherty and his The xx bandmates Romy and Oliver Sim… and they all understand the brief; ride the waves from bangers to blissful.

In a week with so many releases and directions, the most beautiful noises come from Andrew PM Hunt who returns as Dialect with Atlas of Green. Man alive, the production is just wild. It’s like a whole little world unfolding and shimmering in the sunshine. The textures are just amazing, it really is wonderful sound design and a beautiful headspace to get immersed in. Very highly recommended.

Trio Honeyglaze release their first LP in partnership with Fat Possum and Real Deal is exactly that, a proper whopper! It develops the smart and dense vibes of their Speedy Wunderground debut and has angst and joy and the whole rattling range in between. It is a different mood to their fine debut, but it remains an evocative one.

I mean, if you wanna talk about proper Drift Favs™, Flow Critical Lucidity is the ninth solo LP from the experimental icon Thurston Moore! There is a lot of density to the arrangements, but even at its most thrashing there is a lot of sensibility and it’s absolutely one of his most accessible works under his own name. There is a little refrain that sounds just like those dreamy lifts on Murray Street and I totally punched the air; loosely controlled euphoria. Oh god, and when Lætitia Sadier appears in the background it’s all a bit too much. Full of subtlety and texture, it’s really, really good.

Another of the week’s big returns is Bright Eyes with a later career gem in Five Dice, All Threes. Whereas lots of big bands get more and more refined and produced, there is a rawness and a weirdness here that's really engaging. When it’s up, it’s really up and few people get close to them.

Graham Coxon and Rose Elinor Dougall once again combine their considerable talents as The WAEVE with their second LP, City Lights. The production (with James Ford) is fantastic, there is such a brood and menace and their voices both together and apart are perhaps the best either have ever sounded. Dark and driving.

Odyssey is the second solo LP from London-based saxophonist and composer Nubya Garcia. She remains one of the leading lights of the jazz renaissance (especially in London), but Odyssey is very much about her ability to bring in other styles and tones and really go somewhere… on an Odyssey I guess! It really is impressive, way too much to take in on just the one listen in fact.

Blossoms return with the big and bright new Gary LP. 10/10 for the Sean Dyche connection too. The Academy is the debut LP from Vermont-based Lutalo and there really is something a bit special going on here. Next up on our stereo and one for you all to check out. Flood is a gently psychedelic return from Hippo Campus, we also have some signed prints on this one. fabric presents the dynamic duo Confidence Man in the mix. Fight The Real Terror is the poignant new set from New York singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Shara Nova as My Brightest Diamond. Viva Tu is the vibrant return of Manu Chao and it is really charming stuff. Lemons, Limes And Orchids is the new LP from the inimitable Joan As Police Woman and her voice, especially, sounds superb.

Arrivals and departures department remains busy with lots of other things still due to land, so we’ll be sure to tell you more shortly about Beautify Junkyards, The Soundcarriers and the wonderful Tristwch y Fenywod. None are ones to miss.
