July’s Record of the Month is the debut LP from Melbourne (Naarm)-based trio Folk Bitch Trio, and they sound sublime!
Gracie Sinclair, Jeanie Pilkington and Heide Peverelle are Folk Bitch Trio, three players and writers with sublime voices. Following a run of well-received singles, their debut Now Would Be A Good Time is released this month on Bloomington’s Jagjaguwar and has been bringing twinkling witchy magic to the Drift stereo for a couple of weeks now. Written and performed as a trio, they all sing lines and you can hear the nuance between their voices, but the interplay between them in harmony is pretty magical stuff and - most importantly - never overplayed. It could easily have become an exercise in making a nice sound - which they certainly do - but the arrangements across acoustic-leaning instrumentation are both dreamy and not short of a smart little hook.
For all its gorgeous and swooning three-part vocal harmonies, there are plenty of darker moments in the lyrical themes, a raw portrayal of young adulthood across themes of love, loss, sex, breakups and identity. But, even at their most unflinching, there is still much humour and there are plenty of wry lines. Mostly minimalist in its production, it is ethereal and just beautifully delivered. Spellbinding stuff.
Someone online described them as being “whimsigoth” which I hope they are okay with as it is absolutely brilliant and - in the very best way - perfectly encapsulates them!
