Just Mustard - We Were Just Here

October’s Record of the Month is We Were Just Here, the anthemic and panoramic new LP from Dundalk five-piece Just Mustard.

Without obviously making a wholesale shift in sonics, the band’s third album was inspired by club spaces and the immediacy that they bring, leaning towards a different type of euphoria. Self-produced by the band, they brought in the inimitable services of David Wrench (FKA Twigs, Frank Ocean, Caribou) to the mixing desk, expanding their palette while keeping things strange, textured, and uniquely their own.

“I wrote the lyrics for this song by imagining myself on a dance floor. We wanted to write more songs that suited places like that. I suppose I would describe it as an existential love song but you can hear it and feel it any way you like.”
- Katie Ball

As we said, this is no huge departure and the core Just Mustard elements remain. Katie Ball’s echoing vocals will still haunt you long after the album has come to an end. The jagged guitars create dense walls of sound, with wailing and industrial noises, but the mood is more of a shimmer than a fog. Whereas the catharsis was darker and more brooding on their earlier albums, We Were Just Here has a communal sense of release.

Dark and mysterious, dreamy and ethereal, it’s a hugely impressive progression and an album rich in ecstatic immediacy.
