Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Richard Dawson & Circle, The KVB, Pye Corner Audio, The KVB, Betamax vs Clive Bell and Matt Berry.

For the last time in November, it’s your all new and exciting, Records of the Week.

Hello, Friends.

Cult hero and "diminutive Geordie troubadour" Richard Dawson joins forces this week with Finnish heavy-metal pioneers Circle for the utterly rollocking Henki. Full of twists and turns, there are some great drives as you'd expect, but it's Dawson's wickedly dark turn of phrase and euphoric falsetto that really makes this one fly. Our Record of the Week, we absolutely love this already!

+ Indie LPs are pressed on double Green vinyl and include a 12x12" art print.

London three-piece Voka Gentle release the gloriously weird and wonky WRITHING! It is such a beautifully produced set of songs, hard to tell where the edges of the voices stop and the instruments begin, a blurry and hypnotic treat. Really highly recommended.

+ 2LP is pressed on Yellow vinyl.
+ Locals, the band will be playing an instore for us on Monday 6th December [More].

Coldwave duo The KVB return with Unity, their most potent and immediate record yet. Produced and mixed by Andy Savours (Black Country, New Road, My Bloody Valentine, The Horrors) it really floats, a dark and moody haze of synths and radiant guitars.

Voka Gentle WRITHING!

Betamax - co-founder of the much-acclaimed The Comet Is Coming and Soccer96 - collaborates with Clive Bell (his dad by the way!), musician and former Jah Wobble collaborator. Such a rich work this one, flowing and pensive suites with Betamax's percussion lines weaving in and out.

El Michels Affair follows up the massive success of their full-length Yeti Season with The Abominable EP. A collection of unreleased tracks, alternate takes, and instrumentals from the Yeti Season recording sessions. Sick funk cuts and "cinematic soul" of New York-based musician Leon Michels.

+ Indie LPs are pressed on baby-yeti-blue coloured vinyl.
+ Alternating sleeve art is supplied at random.

Following the huge acclaim earlier this year for Matt Berry's eighth studio album The Blue Elephant, Acid Jazz Records release Gather Up, a compilation album encompassing his singular musical adventures. Listening to these twenty-one tracks together really does highlight what a great songwriter he is.

+ 2LP is pressed on Red Vinyl.

+ There is a seriously lush extended edition on 5LP/4CD with 28 pages of illustrations and notes. The LP Box is strictly limited to 1500 copies and comes with a certificate of authenticity, signed by Matt.

Also this week; Rufus Wainwright collaborates with The Amsterdam Sinfonietta (well, they did in January 2017, and this is the recording). His vocals are just lush. One Little Independent Records release Arise, the last album from the irrepressible and sadly missed Dan SartainBroken Hearts & Beauty Sleep is the new mini album from Mykki Blanco, featuring guests Blood Orange, Big Freedia, Kari Faux and more. David Christian of Comet Gain releases a solo LP (with the kind help of numerous friends on numerous instruments as 'The Pinecone Orchestra') called For Those We Met On The Way. We have also just taken stock of the excellent Morning Pageants Remixes from Delmer Darion.

Lastly this week, Pye Corner Audio release the totally enthralling Entangled Routes. CDs are here, LPs are due in a week or so and are VERY limited.

Due to land very shortly also are; Sunn 0))) (CDs, LPs are next year), Glok (the electronic alter ego of Andy Bell), Low Hummer and Marissa Nadler.

Some excellent not-new releases popping into your inbox tomorrow from; Arthur Russell, Salah Ragab, Don Cherry, the seasonally appropriate Vince Guaraldi Trio and David Bowie's Brilliant Adventure.

Tomorrow is BLACK FRIDAY. Don't worry, we're not doing sales or discounts, it's hard enough to get hold of stock as it is! We do, however, have a pretty nice set of exclusives in the shop Friday from 10am, then online Saturday from 8am.
