Records of the Week

July had already been a great month for the new stuff, but this final Friday is just glorious all round.

Ryan Davis and his Roadhouse Band return this week with New Threats From the Soul and it really is pretty wonderful stuff. As you’ll recall, we were high evangelists for his Dancing On The Edge album, so we did have pretty high expectations for this new LP, but the progression in all areas is absolutely dazzling. Full of idiosyncrasies, his voice is right up there with David Berman and Kurt Wagner, low rumbling laments and squawking hooks. Lyrically it is wild, deeply poetic and eloquent long flowing songs full of wry humour. And musically, it is just so full without ever sounding bloated. Country whines, bar band bravado, deep alt roots and some gorgeously off-kilter moments that we won’t spoil as you really do all need to listen to this one. An album of absolute maximalism, confirmation that he’s the real deal. An instant classic.

+ Available on exclusive double White vinyl.

Keeping it country, I Love People is the new album from Drift-favourite Cory Hanson, leader of the awesome and hard-to-define Wand band. It is billed as a Hanson solo affair, but the lineup of musicians is the same one heard on Wand’s recent Vertigo LP, giving a beautifully full quality to this new album. His voice sounds magnificent, confident and swooning; so much so in fact that it’s easy to gloss over just how dense and poetic the lyrics are, with all the shades of light and dark. A sort of wistful post-country space, but the way it brings in stirring orchestrations, abstract little brass hues and the odd guitar crunch really makes this one as gloriously difficult to pigeon hole as anything from the Wand/Hanson canons. Love it!

Man, this week! Alfredo 2 is the flamin’ new collaboration between Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist. They only announced it last week and we’ve been spinning it hard since, it is full of allure. Proper cinematic production and Gibbs’ voice is so commanding. We’ve had some incredible rap records of late, but this one really does feel like

+ Available as a very limited edition pressing with an alt Painted Alternate Cover Art, Vodka Sauce Colour Vinyl, printed inner sleeves and Full Colour 12"x24" Fold Out Poster Insert with Painting Cover Variant Album Cover Art. Double 180g.

On The Wing is the gorgeous debut LP from Kent songwriter Yoshika Colwell. We worked with her on a custom Dinked Edition, so it’s an album we’ve been listening to quite a lot for quite a while now, but instant observations playing it in the shop this week (it has been sunny) is that it feels full of warm optimism in this light, whereas there was a certain melancholy in the spring afternoons. Subtle but very pretty and one for the repeat plays.

+ Available as a limited Dinked Edition on Deep Red colour vinyl.

The week’s biggest holy shit moments ALL arrive on Louhi, the latest LP from prolific and irrepressible Finnish band Pharoah Overlord. Initially started as a stoner rock indulgence by members of the also splendid Circle band, it has evolved through Krautrock hues and synth terror over the years, and this latest LP is monolith sized magnificence. A two track drone forged set for guitars, synths and hurdy-gurdy… oh, and longtime collaborator Aaron Turner just absolutely summoning purest black terror on vocals. It is honestly thrilling. Also features Tyneside maverick Richard Dawson which always goes over well with us. Highly recommended.

+ Available on Pink Smoke colour vinyl.

Ohio trio Golomb have quietly been causing a stir with their self-releases, now joining with the esteemed No Quarter label to release The Beat Goes On. It is all about the slow builds, loose rootsy harmonies or fuzzed out guitars filling the stereo with such warmth. You know that we’d never use the comparison lightly, but there is some serious YLT energy going on here folks. A real gem and one we’ll be playing loads!

Also in the racks this week; When The Flowers Bloom is the very pretty Stones Throw debut from Los Angeles producer Lionmilk. Night Moves return on Domino with Double Life and it is possibly their most pop leaning set yet. Big pensive hooks. Autofiction is the new LP from Far Caspian and it really is a charmer, an entirely self-produced set of DIY janglers. Men In Love is a collaboration between author Irvine Welsh & The Sci-Fi Soul Orchestra, with a soundtrack of Motown and disco shapes through a contemporary electronic lens. Find El Dorado is a new album of reinterpretations that sees Paul Weller revisit songs that have long lived in the back of his mind. His voice sounds mint.

Lastly for this week, we have Now Would Be A Good Time, the debut LP from Folk Bitch Trio, our July 2025 Record of the Month. Gracie Sinclair, Jeanie Pilkington and Heide Peverelle are Folk Bitch Trio, three players and writers with sublime voices. Their accomplished debut is mostly minimalist in its production and just beautifully delivered.
