Record of the Week is an absolute peach (she's Georgian too!), the self-titled debut from Mattiel.
Mattiel Brown (pronounced ‘maa-TEEL’) spent her formative years learning White Stripes songs on a farm in rural Georgia, only to find Jack White years later to be one of the architects of her success with some choice support slots. It's easy to see why he liked her so much. Good old-fashioned garage blues that could have originated anywhere between 1955 and 2018. She has a brilliant vocal, a commanding sort of shout over the howling organs and shotgun guitar riffs. It links it all together as the tones move around through RnB, Rockabilly and Soul, like the turning of a dial on a radio.
2LP Crystal coloured vinyl pressing on Heavenly following a debut on the equally brilliant Burger Records in the USA last Autumn.
