Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Bobby Gillespie & Jehnny Beth, Snapped Ankles, The Go! Team, Dougie Stu, Laura Mvula, Jon Hopkins, The Murlocs and Fuzzy Lights.

An excellent start to July with some real bangers and lots of exclusives too!

Hello, Friends.

Our Record of the Week for the first time in July is Utopian Ashes, the debut collaborative album Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie and solo artist (and Savages vocalist) Jehnny Beth. It's pretty heavy stuff, narratively structured around the breakdown of a relationship, but the subtle movements from swaggering rock 'n' roll to a vulnerable introspection is pretty powerful. Recorded with Gillespie’s 'Scream bandmates, as well as Beth’s regular creative foil Johnny Hostile.

+ Indies retail exclusive edition is pressed on Clear vinyl.

The most-excellent Snapped Ankles return with the most-excellent Forest Of Your Problems. They really are in pulsating form with Danalogue on production duties and perhaps their most propulsive set of songs to date. Such a joy, this one. Come the sun, come the SA bangers!

+ Available to indie shops only, The Protester Edition is produced using recycled offcuts from the vinyl manufacturing process, to produce a ‘forest floor’ mix, with each disc having a unique colour and texture. We will also be shipping them in custom Snapped Ankles paper bags.

Snapped Ankles - Forest Of Your Problems

There ain't no one that sounds one-bit like them! A massive welcome back to
The Go! Team in euphoric form. Tell you what, if you want to talk about summer bangers, Get Up Sequences Part One is the road trip mixtape. Hugely dense music with so many timbres and tones, it really flows beautifully.

+ We had the distinct pleasure of releasing Get Up Sequences Part One as our 108th Dinked Edition and we have just made our last few copies available, now!

Melbourne-based five-piece The Murlocs (which includes two members of King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard) release their new LP Bittersweet Demons this week. Really good vibes, moving around between sunshine-pop, blues-rock stompers and psychedelia.

+ Indie LP is ghostly effect coke bottle clear with lemon vinyl.
+ Standard LP is white with baby blue splatter vinyl.

Heavenly Recordings this week give a full UK release to Familiar Future, the debut solo album from acclaimed Bay Area multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer Doug Stu. Really like this, super-soulful, jazzy R&B and the artwork is really lush too.

+ Indie LP is Green Vinyl.

Pink Noise is the excellent third LP from Laura Mvula, a love-letter to high-pop eighties production without ever appearing to be posturing or over styled. Vocally she (natch) sounds amazing and even with all the cues to various titans of the 80's, she never sounds like she is styling out or copying.

+ Indie LP is Orange vinyl.
+ Standard LP is Pink vinyl.

Presented as the sister record to 2014’s Asleep Versions, Piano Versions is a collection of ambient piano cover versions from the ever-reliable Jon Hopkins. We love everything Jon does, but it has to be said, piano mode Jon really is lush. Ambient and environmental piano reworks of Roger & Brian Eno, Thom Yorke, Luke Abbott and James Yorkston.

+ Very limited Ocean Blue colour vinyl.

Also this week; Argentinian cellist, composer and producer Sebastian Plano releases the quite beautiful Save Me Not on Decca Records. Nashville songwriter Tristen's new album Aquatic Flowers is now with us on vinyl, including a limited Blue colour pressing for us indies. The Attendant is the new project from Pete Astor (The Loft, Weather Prophets, Wisdom of Harry, Ellis Island Sound) and Ian Button (Death in Vegas, Papernut Cambridge, Go Kart Mozart). Audit is available as a super-limited clear vinyl 10". ACR:EPC is the second of a trilogy of EPs by A Certain Ratio. EPC is dedicated to Andrew Weatherall. Four collaborative pieces, really good stuff. Limited Cornflour Blue Vinyl. Clang Clang Ho is the soft-rock bubble-pop LP from Cub Scout Bowling Pins, the delicious new side project from Guided By Voices. Due shortly, shipping as of next week. They Carried The Dead In A U.F.O is the fifth LP from Cult of Dom Keller via Fuzz Club Records. Dark psychedelia and experimentalism on a very handsome (and limited) Gold colour vinyl pressing.

Rocket Recordings release the self-titled LP from The Holy Family (members of Guapo) and boy is it lush. It moves from pastorals and hissing atmospherics, to kosmische and spidery riffed cinematics. Pretty special stuff.

Lastly this week, After a hiatus of over eight years Fuzzy Lights make a hugely welcome return with Burials. It really is quite a marvel, delicate layers that stack up to feel pretty epic. Do investigate this one.

Reissue news tomorrow for you from; Southern Energy Ensemble, Joni Mitchell, ESG, Dirty Three, Leatherface and Yuji Toriyama & Ken Morimura's utterly brilliant Aerobics.
