A good few gestures towards the Moon this week, as Stanley Kubrick's film turns fifty*

Hello, Friends.

Record of the Week is ANIMAThom Yorke's solo return and a suitably ambitious new project incorporating sections made to soundtrack a film with Paul Thomas Anderson. ANIMA is tense and dense, it floats through sections of beats and tones and builds a palpable sense of anxiety. Full of his instantly recognisable musical signatures, with enough surprises to really keep up coming back. Produced with Nigel Godrich, It really is a work with no wasted gestures, quite stunning in fact.

+ Available NOW on a limited Indie Edition: Orange 140 gram double vinyl in a wide-spine single sleeve with an additional 10th track (Ladies & Gentlemen, Thank You for Coming).

+ Available 2nd August on Deluxe Edition: A beautiful hardback book containing both the lyrics and many strange drawings done in pencil by Stanley Donwood & Dr Tchock. Orange 180 gram double vinyl with an additional 10th track (Ladies & Gentlemen, Thank You for Coming). Printed onto Italian Fedrigoni Special Brown material paper and section sewn, the book is made up with an exposed orange cloth spine and orange gilt edging and finished with Bodonian Binding.

Keep an eye on our socials this weekend for something pretty special with the ANIMA visuals.

The Quiet Temple release their self-titled debut album on Point Of Departure. An amorphous musical collective put together by Rich Machin and Duke Garwood, with a rolling cast of players assembled from the likes of Soulsavers, Spiritualized, Stereolab and Julian Cope. All recorded live, it's got such a lush hazy vibe to it. The self-described classification of "experimental cosmic-psyche-jazz-Krautrock-post-punk-dub" is right on the money. Feeling this.

Now this isn't new news... this is in fact old news about an archive release, but we're hyped on it and I think a lot of you thought we'd made the whole thing up. We finally have copies of Neil Young's Dead Man (A Film By Jim Jarmusch, Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture) soundtrack. It's bloody lush this.

Drift Record Shop

This morning we announced that the 24th Dinked Edition will be Comet Gain's new Fireraisers, Forever! album on Tapete Records. We have a really lush blue vinyl edition with a bonus 7". It's limited to just 400 copies, so don't hang about as they are flying out.

Australian psych-rock group Stonefield return with their King Gizzard–produced fourth LP BENT. Comprised of four sisters, Stonefield share the Gizz’s penchant for dramatic, zoned-out riffs and BENT is a deliciously heavy slab.

North London rising soul sensation Laville releases his debut album The Wanderer on Acid Jazz.

Goon release their debut LP Heaven is Humming on Partisan Records. Scuzzy rock in waves and some really lush step downs and back up again in between.

Always perfectly capturing the zeitgeist, Darren Hayman releases his 18th solo album, 12 Astronauts, on the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Utterly charming this. CD is here, LP lands next week.

King's Mouth sees the iconoclastic Flaming Lips once again tread uncharted territory. These twelve new originals are threaded together by cinematic narration courtesy of The Clash’s Mick Jones. Additionally, the music parallels front man Wayne Coyne’s immersive art installation of the same name. Originally released on 180g gold vinyl for Record Store Day.

Montreal, Quebec-based musician Ada Lea is also a painter and visual artist, and traces of her many creative abilities run throughout her debut album What We Say In Private. Lo-fi and blurry production and some very smart writing, enjoying this a lot. LP is here, CD shortly.

Prince - Originals

Another absolutely superb compilation called Sunny Side Up on Brownswood. A heavy new set that shines a light on the independent underground in Melbourne, where a close-knit collection of artists have taken cues from soul, jazz and club culture to carve out a fresh Melbournian sound. Featuring nine different groups, many of them sharing members and studios, the record surveys the musical contours of this bubbling scene, nodding to house, broken beat, samba, p-funk and soul. We are bloody hammering this.

+ Limited Indie shop pressing on magenta coloured vinyl.

Originally recorded in 1983 for a landmark feature-length documentary, For All Mankind, directed by American journalist, film director and screenwriter, Al Reinert, Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks was written, produced and performed by Brian Eno together with his brother Roger and Daniel Lanois. The film featured 35mm footage of the Apollo moon landing with real-time commentary as well as the Apollo astronauts sharing their recollections of the momentous events surrounding it. July 19th 2019 Marks the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing and in celebration Eno releases this very special anniversary edition featuring the original album remastered by Abbey Road’s Miles Showell as well as an accompanying album comprising of 11 new instrumental compositions reimagining the soundtrack to For All Mankind. It's epic stuff.

Sourced directly from Prince's enormous archive of Vault recordings, Originals is a brand new 15-track album featuring 14 previously unreleased recordings that illuminate the vital, behind-the-scenes role Prince played in the careers of other artists. Stunning stuff this, and the Deluxe Pack is really nice, a once only pressing on double 180g purple vinyl with a 24 page colour booklet plus a CD. All housed in a Hardback 12" gatefold book format sleeve.

As ever, have fun listening through these many musical directions. Next week we'll be based in a tent down at Port Eliot (for the last time 😔), so expect some brief dispatches and hopefully plenty of weird signed things once we come back to reality.
