Best New Reissues

Best New Reissues: Donald Byrd, Oscar Peterson, Cloud Nothings, Discovery and Witchfinder General.

New-Not-New.

Hello, Friends.

Two jazz classics for the racks to start us off this week and both of them have been masterfully restored. Oscar Peterson’s Night Train celebrates its 60th anniversary with the complete original album presented in full. Such graceful stuff, with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen locking in and giving Peterson all the space to just glide up and down the keys.

The album is reissued as part of Verve’s Acoustic Sounds Series and features transfers from analog tapes. Remastered and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, in deluxe gatefold packaging.

Next, a serious live set with Donald Byrd’s At The Half Note Café Vol. 1. The quintet (including Pepper Adams and Duke Pearson) recorded the session at Manhattan's Half Note in 1960 and it was originally released as two LPs. This is the first volume and we’d hope that a second will follow in time.

This stereo Tone Poet Vinyl Edition was produced by Joe Harley and mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analogue master tapes. Pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI and packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket.

Cloud Nothings - Attack On Memory [10th Anniversary Edition]

Carpark Records have pressed up a very handsome 10th anniversary edition of Cloud Nothings’ absolutely banging second album, Attack On Memory. The band’s early EPs, demos, 7”s and other releases were full of swimming bedroom pop wooze, but the Steve Albini-recorded Attack On Memory is just such a hard and fast departure into high fidelity. It’s still got such energy.

+ Housed in Foil sleeve with all-new colourised artwork.
+ Pressed on Sky Blue colour vinyl.
+ Includes two Flexis with Unreleased Tracks.

Originally released on XL in 2009, Discovery is the collaborative synth pop project from Rostam Batmanglij (founding member and producer of Vampire Weekend) and Wes Miles (of Ra Ra Riot). Also features appearances from Ezra Koenig (also a Weekend Vampire) and the divine Angel Deradoorian. Big synth pop.

+ Pressed on limited edition Orange colour vinyl and includes an unlisted bonus track that was not on the XL pressing.

Paul Ferris’ Witchfinder General film soundtrack has a really fun new edition on Trunk, including a.. yep.. Pop-up gatefold sleeve! Very much in The Wicker Man territory, with deeply sinister folk through sunlight pastorals. Really great stuff.

Lastly today, we have a compilation that is driving us wild with the third and final volume of Saigon Supersound. A brilliantly curated collection of music from Vietnam during the 1960s and early 1970s. Pop music, funk, soul and all sorts else through the Saigon filter. It really has some special moments. The CD format has landed, LPs in a couple of weeks we hope.
