Best New Reissues

Best New Reissues: Marvin Gaye, Ryo Kawasaki, Bobbie Gentry, Rusty, David Bowie and a tribute to John Anderson.

It’s the best of the reissues over at Drift, and they are sizzlin’.*

Hello, Friends.

Ripping us into action this week with our best new reissues is Juice, the legendary jazz-funk record from the late, and exceptionally great Japanese guitarist Ryo Kawasaki. It's a sick package from Mr Bongo and this one is a vinyl exclusive, so don't rush to the digital streamers, just buy yourself a copy right now and we guarantee you that your BBQ is going to sound even more sizzling this week. Free flowing with amazing tones, this is a proper gem.

Few albums are as iconic, as enduring and as culturally important as Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, which receives a 50th Anniversary pressing this week. The artwork recreation is pin-sharp, a deluxe gatefold sleeve on heavy board with printed inner sleeves. The second LP includes alternative mixes and mono singles. This is the EU version, the source audio is taken from Kevin Grey’s master, but cut on a different lacquer to the US edition. For what it's worth, we blasted a copy yesterday and it sounded pretty mint... But try publishing that on the Steve Hoffman forums!

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On [50th Anniversary EU Edition]

t's always time to rejoice when Bobbie Gentry is on the stereo. Playing out nice and loud, we have a cut-down double LP edition of the 2018 The Girl From Chickasaw County box set. The compilation takes tracks from her iconic set of eight albums for the Capitol label, swapping in some alternate takes and demos. If you haven't spent any time with her before, this is a great jump off point; you can thank us later.

Something Borrowed, Something New is a tribute to American country music singer and songwriter John Anderson. His voice is iconic so it's pretty lush hearing such a great roll call of his contemporaries singing his songs, including; Nathaniel Rateliff, Sturgill Simpson, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Eric Church, the great John Prine and more.

On the racks this week we have the eighth volume of the much-loved PAY IT ALL BACK On-U Sound label samplers, with alt mixes and exclusives to include; African Head Charge, Mark Stewart, Creation Rebel, and Lee “Scratch” Perry. Always essential.

David Bowie

Parlophone release break out editions from the David Bowie Brilliant Adventure [1992 — 2001] box set this week. The drop includes; Toy, Black Tie White Noise, Buddha Of Suburbia, Outside, Hours... and the absolutely amazing Earthling. Great production quality.

Not really old, but certainly just landed. Elvis Costello and his partner in his first band Rusty - Allan Mayes - have reunited for, as Costello puts it, "the record we would have cut when we were 18... If anyone had let us." The Resurrection of Rust is produced by Elvis Costello and Sebastian Krys and features Costello and Mayes backed by Costello’s band the Imposters.

Barry Adamson's Oedipus Schmoedipus has just landed via Mute and we've also ended up with just one last very rare copy of Tool's Fear Inoculum.

Lastly this week, some proper jazz classics from the Verve vaults, to include; Count Basie's April in ParisSonny Rollins' On Impulse!Keith Jarrett's Treasure Island and a John Coltrane triple with BalladsColtrane and the all-time A Love Supreme. We are high vibing.
