Best New Reissues

Ffa Coffi Pawb, Quasimoto, Karen Dalton, Q Lazzarus, Tim Hecker and Cindy Lee.

From Bethesda to Colorado, bop to hop, cult voices and an album title too long for a CD spine…

We start this week in gorgeous Bethesda, Wales, circa 1988 for the absolutely splendid Ffa Coffi Pawb and the reissue of the band’s debut, Dalec Peilon. You might not recognise the title or band, but you’ll soon find familiar tones, with singer and guitarist Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), drummer Dafydd Ieuan (also of Super Furry Animals), Rhodri Puw (Gorky's Zygotic Mynci) and Dewi Emlyn who plays a big part in both band’s histories. It’s an album well soaked in that rare and evergreen Welsh take on psychedelic pop. Ever propulsive and crackling away in hard and brittle late-eighties production.

Right up our street and blasting on the stereo until further notice.

+ Available on limited White colour vinyl.

A more contemporary banger back in press next, with a very handsome new edition of Quasimoto’s Yessir Whatever on Stones Throw. The LP collects tracks created by Madlib and Quasimoto over a roughly twelve-year period, with unreleased and otherwise rare cuts. This 2025 edition is pressed on silver vinyl and is packaged with a silver foil peel-off sticker to “reveal the guts” of Jeff Jank’s iconic sleeve design.

After a little delay, Karen Dalton’s Shuckin' Sugar is in the building and it’s full of dark magic. The unearthed live sessions from 1963 and 1964 were originally released for RSD a few years back, but the seven solo performances and five duets (with her then-husband Richard Tucker) are made available again, pressed on Sky Blue colour vinyl.

Sacred Bones are shining a light on the work of cult singer Q Lazzarus. Goodbye Horses is released in conjunction with Aridjis Fuentes’ documentary film of the same name, with a collection of songs that span the entirety of Q’s career, showcasing the different eras of her work and the full breadth of her personality.

+ Available on limited Green colour vinyl.

Best New Reissues

Also new-not-new this week; Oasis’ much-loved Whatever single has a limited colour vinyl pressing. We have a much-needed repress of Aphex Twin’s Blackbox Life Recorder 21f / in a room7 F760. Another essential thats back in the building is Aerial M’s The Peel Sessions which we raved about late last year. We have a limited White vinyl 30th Anniversary Edition of Cap'n Jazz's first and only full-length album; Burritos, Inspiration Point, Fork Balloon Sports, Cards in the Spokes, Automatic Biographies, Kites, Kung Fu, Trophies, Banana Peels We’ve Slipped on, and Egg Shells We’ve Tippy Toed Over… no wonder they nicknamed it Shmap'n Shmazz. We have also just this minute taken stock of Tim Hecker’s Shards, a collection of pieces originally written for various film and TV soundtracks. Naturally, we love this.

For the jazz heads we have two really great releases under the Blue Note ‘Classic Vinyl’ series, with Dexter Gordon’s boppin’ Our Man in Paris and Sonny Rollins’ first lead set with Volume 1. Sonny is Mono, Dexter is Stereo and both have been all-analog mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.

Ending today, as we promised, with Cindy Lee. Now, the amazing Diamond Jubilee reissue that we were talking about did indeed fly out the door, but we do have a repress booked for later next month and you can pre-order that here. What we do currently have in the building - and it mustn’t be snoozed on - is What’s Tonight to Eternity?, the excellent album that precedes it. Playing and enjoying that muchly.
