Jake Xerxes Fussell and James Elkington, HEALTH, Portugal. The Man and Arca.

Records of the Week

Jake Xerxes Fussell and James Elkington, HEALTH, Portugal. The Man and Arca.

From the beautifully pastoral to the fiercely crushing and industrial. Even late in the year we cover the bases.

Firstly this week, acclaimed songwriters and Drift house favs Jake Xerxes Fussell and James Elkington have collaborated on their first original film score for Rebuilding, the poignant new feature film written and directed by Max Walker-Silverman. It made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier (we haven’t seen it, would you like to subscribe to our Letterboxd so you know when we do?) but this really is gorgeous music, full of tranquillity, rolling melodies and introspective moments.

LA industrial noise rock icons HEALTH release the all-new CONFLICT DLC this week and it’s every bit as abrasive as you’d expect. It’s very much a companion piece to their acclaimed 2023 album RAT WARS, but actually more straightforward in its supreme weight. Lots of gnarled nuance, but equally just a slab to totally immerse in. Well good.

+ Available on exclusive Red vinyl.

SHISH is the new LP from Portugal. The Man (the Portland via Alaska rock band, there is nothing directly Portuguese about them just to clarify) and it’s gloriously stripped back, certainly in comparison to their last few. Up-tempo, some great hooks and certainly radio-friendly rock ’n’ roll, it’s just got this nice woody quality to it too and some lovely space.

+ Available on exclusive Denali Blue colour vinyl
.

Lastly for this week’s new releases, we have a limited edition first ever pressing of Venezuelan musician and record producer Arca’s iconic @@@@@ mixtape. An hour of wild sonic experimentalism, with delicate timbres and some proper brutal doof too. A mercurial talent.

+ Presented on double vinyl with an etched D-side.
