Records of the Week

Jon Hopkins, Nick Cave, Denzel Curry, Yannis & The Yaw, Ty Segall, Los Bitchos, Wunderhorse and The Bug Club.

We are rounding-out August 2024 with a full, diverse and final week of new releases. Some instant classics involved.

Our Record of the Week is Jon Hopkins’ RITUAL on Domino and it really is pretty special stuff. RITUAL is a single, electronic symphony that evolves, ebbs, flows and unfolds over eight sonic chapters. From transcendental floats to hypnotic and cavernous subs, the evolution is both methodical and full of organic energy. I’d guess we have played this one about a dozen times through now and each time it feels different. You recognise little insignias, but it’s almost like flashbacks from the last time you bathed in its haze. Genuinely masterful stuff and so much to keep discovering.

+ Available on limited double Clear vinyl
.

In a week stacked with big hitters, Nick Cave was always going to be a massive big hitter, and his all-new Wild God is a proper big hitter! Although influenced by some of life’s darker experiences (candidly so in the lyrics), Wild God is rousing and frequently really joyous stuff. The Bad Seeds sound suitably muscular for the bigger swells and really get the balance right by sitting back when required to. Gratifying and enthralling, there is again much to discover with this one and it feels very much like a modern classic from the Bad Seeds camp.

+ Available on Black vinyl and very limited Clear vinyl.
+ Visit us in person on Friday AM for signed LP copies at the counter.
Denzel Curry - King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2
Denzel Curry returns in absolutely furious form on King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2, a companion to his career-breaking mixtape. Very much the antithesis of his enlightened Melt My Eyez See Your Future LP, this is hard, aggressive and bluntly focused on cash and violence. Featuring guests on every track, it has a hazy vibe like tuning into a radio station, but it is Curry who consistently the most enthralling. His voice is instantly recognisable, but Denzel remains otherwise a total chameleon and that is pretty gripping to watch.

+ Available on exclusive Neon Green colour vinyl
.

Midas is the highly-anticipated second LP from rising rock band Wunderhorse and it really does have wallop. They have long been revered for their live show performances and this LP is all about capturing that experience. For us it is most interesting when it changes pace, but there is absolutely no doubting how hard this one hits.

Talkie Talkie marks the return of Los Bitchos and it is a shimmering and super-fun set. Their debut was full of winding exotica and they have taken that energy and turned it to the dancefloor.

+ Available on Magenta colour vinyl with an alternative “Night Cover” sleeve.
+ We have signed posters too.

Lagos Paris London is a really joyous collaborative project from Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis and the late, great Tony Allen. Recorded back in 2016, it bubbles between rock, afrobeat, dub and knotty funk with Allen’s drumming making everything sound so vibrant. Yannis & The Yaw finished the songs as a tribute to Allen and Lagos Paris London is a fine testament to his inspiring energy. Good vibes guaranteed!

Keeping the focus on the pigskins, our main man Ty Segall releases Love Rudiments this week, an instrumental album of percussive music. The sonics are pretty magic, with all sorts of timbres in the mix. I mean, you know we love Ty, but this really does have loads of charm and crazy good grooves.
The Bug Club - On The Intricate Inner Workings Of The System
Also this week, iconic electronic band Seefeel return to Warp with Everything Squared. Aprender a Ser: Extended is an EP of supreme sonic trips from Mexico City band Mint Field. Also Jacob Diamond’s Yes Angel is about to land and that one sounds really good.

Lastly today, we are delighted to have On The Intricate Inner Workings Of The System in the racks, our August Record of the Month from the most excellent, The Bug Club. We wrote a little bit about its charms here and you can purchase the limited Loser pressing here which really does look splendid. Lots of bands are dead funny, lots of bands are fiercely driving and loads of bands can write killer hooks, but having it in triple assault really is a joy. Oh, and locals, we just found out that they are playing down the road from us in November. Essential stuff!
