Our November Record of the Month is Nobody Loves You More, the first full-length album from cult musician and legit cultural icon, Kim Deal.
A quick catch up for the unacquainted; Kim Deal joined the fledgling Pixies in 1986 and was a core member across the five album run of Come on Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, Bossanova and Trompe le Monde. During the band’s hiatus in 1988 she formed Breeders with Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses, Josephine Wiggs of the Perfect Disaster, and Britt Walford of Slint (with her twin sister Kelley Deal later replacing Donelly).
This ain’t all of it. As we said, she’s a legit cultural icon.

Although Nobody Loves You More is Kim Deal’s debut album, it isn’t actually her first release under her own name, previously self-releasing a five-part, 10-song 7” vinyl series in 2013. Nobody Loves You More has been meticulously refined over the years, with two of its oldest songs, ‘Are You Mine?’ and ‘Wish I Was’, written and originally recorded as part of the 7” series. An album of slow gestation, it is also high on collaborative energy with contributions from Breeders past and present (Mando Lopez, Kelley Deal, Jim Macpherson, Britt Walford), Raymond McGinley of Teenage Fanclub, Jack Lawrence or Raconteurs and Fay Milton and Ayse Hassan of Savages. The album also features production work from legendary engineer and close friend Steve Albini, with the hugely powerful closing track ‘A Good Time Pushed’ going down as some of his last work. Collaborative certainly, but as testament to both her skills as a writer and her presence as a performer, the album is very much about Kim, and the mood she creates throughout is enthralling.

There are lush wonky pop moments (especially the brass on ‘Coast’), darker and more urgent drives, experimental production and pounding bass sonics; it is an album that really sounds fantastic. Even in its biggest moments, her voice is full of restrained power, and when she whispers, you feel like you’re floating into the speakers to meet her. Truly captivating stuff.
A debut album from a voice we’ve been listening to for thirty years, and one we absolutely can’t get enough of.
