Not-New Records of the Week: Bill Fay, Mary Lattimore, Youth Lagoon, John Coltrane and MF DOOM.

Not-New Records of the Week: Bill Fay, Mary Lattimore, Youth Lagoon, John Coltrane and MF DOOM.

Easing into week number three with old friends in fine form.

Leading today's not-new Records of the Week dispatch is a new collection that documents the quite brilliant Bill FayStill Some Light (Part 1) was originally released in 2010 by David Tibet (Current 93) as a double CD, made up of 70s album demos and 2009 home recordings. Dead Oceans have released an excellent double vinyl pressing that highlights his brilliant and enduring songwriting.

To accompany the release (that we assume will have a Part Two), we have two very limited 7" singles, with excellent reimaginings from Kevin Morby and Steve Gunn.

Collected Pieces gathers together recordings (previously unreleased material, Bandcamp-only singles and other obscurities) made between 2015 and 2020 from the amazing Mary Lattimore. Her serenity is just breathtaking, this really is pure floats.

+ We have a limited number of very impressive-looking 'Gold Ripple' colour vinyl editions.

Mary Lattimore

Impulse! reissue 'Live At The Village Vanguard', the first official live album that John Coltrane recorded. The sessions were early November 1961 at the iconic NYC club and show both sides of Coltrane as artist and band-leader, with soothing proto-Spiritual Jazz and conversely a lot of urgency and drive. The release has been transferred from the original analog tapes mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at QPR. They sound mint.

A couple of other excellent jazz reissues this week with Donald Byrd & Pepper Adams leading the excellent Motor City Scene, and Miles Davis & Michel Legrand collaborating for the Dingo soundtrack.

Fat Possum celebrates the 10th anniversary of Youth Lagoon's debut album The Year of Hibernation with a handsome double 45rpm Cream colour vinyl pressing. Been listening to this a lot, such a beauty.

We have a proper 'blink and you'll miss it' repress of the iconic Fugazi self-titled release on Dischord.

Cassandra Jenkins

Another very limited repress with the 2012 Silver sleeve edition of MF DOOM's Operation: Doomsday. We got a good wedge, but they are flying out.

Cassandra Jenkins' An Overview on Phenomenal Nature was one of 2021's most glorious discoveries over here at Drift. Beautifully played, beautifully sung, witty, funny, sad, it really is lush. After a long old wait we have a limited repress on Aquamarine colour vinyl which looks very handsome.

A playlist to accompany this up on the Drift site. Dive in!
