It’s all about epic returns this week with gargantuan new albums from some of our favourites.
Hello, Friends.
Fossora is the tenth studio album from creative polymath and cultural Icon, Björk. In a nutshell, it’s hugely ambitious, dazzling in its complexity and just a wild sonic experience from one of the most thrilling artists to ever do it. She explained on announcement that the majority of the album is 80-90 beats per minute mark because that is the speed she walks at. There is a real sense of motion to it, a hallucinogenic trip through a genuinely otherworldly landscape. Record of the Week and very highly recommended indeed.

Another massive return this week with Yeah Yeah Yeahs after a decade away and their new Cool It Down album. It’s funny to have an album that both sounds very like them but also distinctly not like them. The euphoria remains so controlled through the orchestrated builds and drops, but they have almost entirely stripped away all of the yelping and frenetics. It’s a really good record.

We’re going to stop saying “massive return” for a bit now as this is getting silly, but… It’s only bloody Pixies! They always arrive with such high expectations and Doggerel has a bit of the thump and growl of the catalogue and plenty of wistful new directions. Pushing 40 years into their career, this is impressively invigorated.

<insert obligatory line about how we could listen to Kurt Wagner singing the phone book> …It is true though! The mighty Lambchop release The Bible and it really is a delicious addition to their hugely impressive discography. Lots of vocoder in the mix again and flashes of disco really keep this one moving through jazz, country and a whole lot more. Great stuff.

Nymph is the full debut LP from British rapper and experimental pop artist Shygirl. Great mix of brittle, digital tones and human voice, the composition and production really is dazzling.

Free LSD is the first album in years from American hardcore punk supergroup OFF! Plenty of subtle nuance, but this really is jacked right up. Great stuff.

Hardcore from these shores next with High Vis and Blending via Dais Records. Political and unabashed, but not without humour and it’s got such great drive to it.

Closure is the fourth album from Brooklyn duo The Vacant Lots. With feet in both synthpop and post-punk, there is much to discover here.

After debuting online back in March, we finally have a physical pressing of Denzel Curry’s Melt My Eyez See Your Future. A product of lockdown, the South Florida rapper welcomes in a wide pool of guests and it moves really well between the introspective moments and the bangers.

Derealization is the hazy, blurred and consuming debut solo album from The Coathangers singer and guitarist, Julia Kugel.

A Live At LEVITATION double this week with live sets from both Moon Duo and Psychic Ills. Such a great series and the custom colour records just look amazing!
Also this week, London electronic act Real Lies release Lad Ash. Plastic Mermaids return on Sunday Best Recordings with It's Not Comfortable To Grow. The vinyl formats of Gabriels’ Angels & Queens (Part I) and Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp’s collaborative 18. The soulful Bloodline Maintenance from Ben Harper. The gloriously produced new Tongue and Groove album from Night Works. The inimitable Blancmange with Private View. The Snuts return with Burn The Empire and lastly we have a limited few copies of Alison Cotton’s The Portrait You Painted Of Me on Rocket Recordings which is special stuff indeed.
