Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Deep Throat Choir, Marconi Union and David Bowie.

Well well, we're already heading into New Music Friday.

Hello, Friends.

Welcome to your first Records of the Week for the new year, 2022 is truly rolling now, eh?!

In Order To Know You is the second album from the east London female and non-binary vocal collective Deep Throat Choir. Founded by Landshapes member Luisa Gerstein, the richness of the  vocal tones here is really delicious, sweeping and euphoric and avoiding maximalism just for the sake of it. Their debut was predominantly cover versions, but on In Order To Know You the songwriting is excellent, both in making the most of the many voices but also in terms of the craft of each song. Our first Record of the Week for 2022, an expansive and euphoric start to the new year.

After a little bit of back-and-forth with dates, we're delighted to have stock today of Signals, the new LP from Manchester-based trio Marconi Union. Electronic ambience with really glorious and subtle cinematic jazz. It's a really beautifully delivered album, this.

+ Our Dinked Editions sold out, but we do have our last limited copies on Indie Exclusive Double Clear vinyl.

David Bowie Hunky Dory

It's a David Bowie double for you folks. Celebrating its 50th Anniversary (17th December 2021 officially), we have a limited and very handsome picture disc edition of Hunky Dory. The fourth album kicked off an 18 month period that would also see the releases of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and Aladdin Sane. Wow.

Also this week is Toy:Box, a standalone release of Bowie's previously unreleased Toy album, new interpretations of songs he’d first recorded between 1964-1971. It was included in the epic Brilliant Adventure box, but is now available as a 6x 10" box set or as a 3CD set. The sessions were recorded following his triumphant Glastonbury 2000 performance and he really is in magnificent voice.

Couple of big reissues to flag up, with The War On Drugs I Don’t Live Here Anymore back in stock on double Blue vinyl, and also the Deluxe edition of The Weather Station's utterly brilliant Ignorance album. An absolute stunner, I do hope we hear more from Tamara soon.

There won't be a 'Not-New' mailer this week (as we have already covered them today), but starting tomorrow we'll have a new weekly preorder summary email for you, and this first week of '22 has some massive new announcements already.

It's good to be back.
