New records that we’re really loving, some big hitters back in the racks too!

Hello, Friends.

Our Record of the Week is Black To The Future, the furious return of Sons of Kemet with their follow up to 2018’s Mercury Prize nominated breakout release Your Queen Is A Reptile. The production is amazing, so full and sonically dense, but everything has enough space to exist on its own and collide in collaboration. Stacked full of guest collaborators, it's a really thrilling evolution of what they already did so well, a hugely impressing album.

I, Castorpollux is the debut solo album from Osaka-born and New York-based pianist Erika Dohi. It is quietly intense, sitting somewhere between contemporary classical, electronic and acoustic. It really is a lush mix, it's sad but has some beautiful moments, it's intimate but then is quite vast too. Highly recommended.

Getting ALL OF THE TICKS over at Drift is Strength of Spring, the excellent second LP from Grave Flowers Bongo Band. Great name (✓), released on Castle Face (✓), produced by Ty Segall (✓), cosmic vibes (✓) and pressed on limited Neon Yellow vinyl (✓)... Told you! Garage rock vibes, but way more psychedelic with some really lovely loops and grooves. It's a hypnotic banger and the acoustic instruments really sound superb, that Ty doesn't half have a good set of ears!

Detritus is the stunning new LP from Sarah Neufeld, composer, violinist and career-long touring and recording member of Arcade Fire. We had the honour of releasing this as a Dinked Edition (number 96), we will pop our last three online now. It really is beautiful, quite sad and lots of big, desolate feelings, but there is always the tiniest little glimmer of light in it all. Make sure to check this out and also play it on all sorts of speakers and headphones, the sounds really are brilliant.

St. Vincent Daddy's Home

Four pretty big ones up next and we've done our best to get hold of a rainbow of exclusive colour vinyl for you...

Daddy's Home! And we're not arguing. Delighted to have St. Vincent back in power-pop mode. Stylistically it's a concept album about browsing through seventies record collections, but there are plenty of bubbling new ideas going on.

+ The Indie shop exclusive is pressed on limited edition transparent vinyl. Whilst stocks last we are including some iron-on patches.

Delta Kream is the tenth studio LP from The Black Keys. Full of stomp and swagger as they look backwards through the iconic blues canon. They do a great job of honouring the Mississippi blues traditions rather than just covering them.

+ Limited Indie LP is smokey marble vinyl.

Fat Pop [Volume 1] is another late career belter from Paul Weller. Battling lockdown logistics, it is coherent and sonically adventurous whilst keeping that signature growl and some pretty healthy riffs.

+ Indie Exclusive LP is pressed on semi transparent Yellow vinyl.

We have a long overdue physical pressing of Phoebe Bridgers' excellent rework EP, Copycat Killer. More than this, we managed to get hold of a few inches of the exclusive 'Mountain Blast' colour vinyl pressing. These will go fast, so please click with gusto.

Drift Records

Matthew E. White & Lonnie Holley collaborate on the absolutely lush Broken Mirror: A Selfie Reflection, a Space Bomb production through-and-through and a massive triumph. Hypnotic grooves that are testament to the power of collaboration and the connection of kindred spirits.

The irrepressible Matt Berry returns on Acid Jazz with the hugely impressive The Blue Elephant. Driving keys, woozing guitars and vocally he sounds commanding. Avoids nostalgia, goes straight in and makes his own prog shapes. A real belter.

+ Limited Indie pressing on Blue vinyl.

Melodies Record Club 001, are you ready? Get this; The first instalment was put together by Four Tet, selecting two big peak-time Jazz tracks he used to spin regularly at Plastic People from Jackie McLean & Michael Carvin and Chris McGregor’s Brotherhood Of Breath. We really do not have many copies of this.

Real Life Situations is the fifth studio LP from Uruguay-born songwriter Juan Wauters. Really good lo-fi vibes with lots of collaboration (including Mac DeMarco, Peter Sagar (AKA Homeshake), Nick Hakim, Cola Boyy and more).

+ Limited Ruby Red vinyl pressing.

Also this week; Irish singer-songwriter Holly Macve returns in beautiful voice. Another super-limited Andy Bell EP on Sonic Cathedral with See My Friends, features a couple of dark magic moments from Pye Corner Audio. Dunedin’s finest, The Chills release their seventh studio album - Scatterbrain - on Fire Records. We have a limited indie version that is pressed on 'Deep sea' blue and white marbled vinyl. Current Joys (Nick Rattigan) returns on Secretly Canadian with Voyager and includes a limited Opaque Purple vinyl pressing bundled with a bonus flexi-disc.

Norwegian duo - artist and writer Jenny Hval and multi-instrumentalist Håvard Volden - release their first album Menneskekollektivet as Lost Girls - after collaborating for more than ten years. It's really really good, but we don't really have any of them. Please remember the name and buy copies when we can get more... We condone you listening to it on the internet in the short term.

We just announced that our 121st Dinked Edition is Tomorrow’s People, the debut as Shire T from Chris Davids, one half of celebrated electronic duo Maribou State. This will be flying!

Tomorrow we will bring you the now well-established Friday Not-New Records of the Week', with releases to include; Anna Calvi, Paul and Linda McCartney, Seefeel, Gil Evans, Special Interest and more.

Was that everything? Felt like a lot? Enjoying diving in.
