Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Julien Baker, A Winged Victory For The Sullen, Galdre Visions, Lost Horizons, Cloud Nothings and Smerz.

This week’s new set are full of bloody stonkers! Come in.

Hello, Friends.

We’re kicking off this very full week with our Record of the Week from A Winged Victory for the Sullen, the composer collaboration between Stars of the Lid founder Adam Wiltzie and L.A. composer Dustin O'Halloran. Invisible Cities is the stunning score to the critically-acclaimed theatre production directed by London Olympics ceremony video designer Leo Warner. Really fantastic stuff; slow, evocative builds.

+ Indie LP is pressed on Beer coloured vinyl.
+ Dinked Edition (Number 86) is pressed on Deep Purple coloured vinyl and has an alternate sleeve artwork with a double-sided art print, designed by Davy Evans.

Little Oblivions is the third studio album by Julien Baker. Recorded in Memphis; it's a really personal set of songs and not only is she unflinching in their telling, she also sings beautifully here. Finding more detail with each listen.

+ Limited Indie edition pressed on golden yellow vinyl.
+ Would you like to watch a live stream? More info here

Galdre Visions is the self-titled debut release from an ambient supergroup on Leaving Records, comprising of Green-House, Nailah Hunter, Ami Dang and Diva Dompé. Based on all it's immaculate components, it's a total no-brainer that we'd love this, but my word, it's absolutely amazing how much we do love this, already.

We shall be playing this for absolutely ages to come, brilliant stuff.

26th February 2021 / LP or CD / Bella Union Lost Horizons

The Shadow I Remember is the hugely triumphant return of Cloud Nothings. It's pretty raw, but singer-songwriter Dylan Baldi's ability to write a banger has arguably never been as clear. Melodic whilst still full of grit.

+ This pressing is on Spectral Light Whirl Vinyl.

Live at Tubby's captures NYC's 75 Dollar Bill (Little Big) Band in full flight. The expanded line up recorded the set on the last day of their spring tour and it really is a thriller. Intimate, cosmic and hypnotising, this is the good stuff.

Music For Soundtracks is an album of ten ambient, atmospheric pieces Richard Norris has recently created for film and TV. This is the first volumne and we're really feeling it!

Lost Horizons release their new album In Quiet Moments on Bella Union label. The album features a stellar array of musical guests including John Grant, C Duncan, Marissa Nadler, Porridge Radio, Penelope Isles, Karen Peris (the innocence mission), Tim Smith (of Midlake), Ren Harvieu and many more. With all those voices, it's testament to its creators' judgment that it all flows so beautifully.

+ Limited Deluxe Edition 2LP is pressed on coloured vinyl; one disc blue, one disc green. Also includes a 16 page booklet, all housed in a heavyweight card cover sleeve and a printed PVC outer sleeve.

+ LP orders will include a signed print, whilst stocks last.

Smerz

Nature Always Wins is the seventh studio album from Maximo Park, exploring themes of identity and the nature & nurture of genetics. Double black vinyl and limited, clear, single vinyl available on this release.

Here Lies Man return with Ritual Divination, full of big riffs and killer Afro-rock jams. We are well hyped on this already. Limited edition with bonus 7" single, if you're quick.

Banane Bleue welcomes back Frànçois & The Atlas Mountains in super-mellow mode. Our Indie LP is pressed on Blue Vinyl

Brijean release Feelings on Ghostly International, silky and warm electronic groovers. Amazing-looking Blue and Pink Swirl 'Lava Lamp' colour vinyl.

Duo Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma return as Mouse on Mars with AAI on Thrill Jockey. It's all based around speech modelling software. The sounds are so captivating and the driving rhythms lay perfectly balanced between South American, jazz and African. Limited indie Grey vinyl pressing.

Time Waits for No One is the first solo LP in years from Cheval Sombre. Spaced-out and hazy ballads, lovely stuff. Limited Indie Shop version LP is pressed on white vinyl.

Outstanding modular work from Kieran Mahon on Eternal Return. Castles in Space are always essential, but this one has chops. Limited White vinyl pressing with an Eternal Flexagon Insert.

Planningtorock teamed up with Chanel for PlanningtoChanel, Glacial electronics with a distinctly cinematic feel. Been waiting ages on this, it's fantastic. Double vinyl pressing with overall matt lamination, with foil-blocked lettering on front of the sleeve and spot gloss on stitching. Looks dope.

The Green Child - a duo of Total Control and Eddy Current Suppression Ring guitarist Mikey Young and Raven Mahon - release Shimmering Basset on Upset The Rhythm. You know how much we love our jangle, this is glorious.

We finally have copies of Lyra Pramuk's sensational Fountain LP. The American musician works entirely with recordings of her own voice, processing and layering largely non-verbal sounds. Totally captivating.

Prosthuman is a set of Krautrock goodness from Berlin's Camera. We're just waiting on our Dinked Edition, but we're going to have a good old rave about this banger once it lands. You can pick up the CD and regular LP now.

Believer is the debut EP from Norwegian duo Smerz on XL. Immaculate pop vibes, really hooked on this. We have some lush postcard sets to give away if you're quick.

We can think of no other fair way to do this, so.... Four Tet has pressed a super limited edition of Madlib's glorious Sound Ancestors album on his Text label. We have some, they are online, now!

Galdre Visions

Now normally at this point, we'd be talking to you about reissues, but to be perfectly honest, we've just told you about so much already today that we're actually going to hold back and talk about not-new music on it's own bespoke mailer tomorrow. It will feature; KMD, Deftones, The National, The Black Crowes, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Charles Mingus, Vashti Bunyan, Neil Young and one of the best albums of all time from PJ Harvey. We also have three excellent compilations concerning Horse Meat Disco, The White Stripes and Deep Modern Jazz From Japan.

Any of you who follow us on Twitter or Facebook will have just seen us raving about Oíche, the debut album from Fears and our 103rd Dinked Edition. It's a really lush one this and the TULLE label have hand-sewn each of the limited 400 sleeves.

If you are browsing the preorder for Fears and Dinked, you will also see new listings for Nick Cave & Warren Ellis, Can, Paul Weller, Weezer, Alan Vega and Wolf Alice.

Look forward to speaking with you all again shortly.
