Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Metronomy, Khruangbin & Leon Bridges, Sea Power, Eric Chenaux, Exek, White Lies and Hurray for the Riff Raff.

Welcoming you into another week of supreme newness.

Hello, Friends.

Say Laura is the glorious return of Eric Chenaux, one of Canada's most respected and long-standing experimental guitar players and songwriters. The free/improvised sonic explorer is in lavish and languorous mode, songs slowly evolving and changing shape. Vocally he sounds absolutely fantastic here and the beeps and clunks throughout its hugely imaginative production are just wild. Our Record of the Week and a real treat.

This week's MVPs are Metronomy and their shimmering new Small World LP. It's such a great listen, roughly broken into either high-gloss pop bangers or moments of mediative introspection. Album closer 'I have seen enough' holds some of their finest (low-key) moments. Expect to hear it everywhere, it's full of ear worms.

Did we even say Tea Towel yet?!

+ Available on an exclusive Crystal Clear Transparent Vinyl pressing.
+ Whilst stocks last, vinyl orders will include an exclusive 12" comic illustrated by Lee O'Connor.
+ Whilst stocks last, all orders will include an exclusive Metronomy Tea Towel.

Metronomy - Small World

Advertise Here is the brilliantly out-there new LP from the Dub-drenched Melbourne post punks EXEK.  Released on Jon Dwyer's Castle Face Records label, it rolls along with lush experimentalism and plenty of turns of pace. We've been enjoying this a great deal.

+ We have UK exclusive "Aqua Blue, Electric Blue and Bone Galaxy" colour vinyl.

Following last year's excellent Texas Sun collaboration, Khruangbin & Leon Bridges re-combine forces on the excellent Texas Moon. Flashes of funk, soul and sunset psychedelia, they really do lock into such a great groove.

+ Pressed on limited indie exclusive "Blue Daze" colour vinyl.

LIFE ON EARTH is the new LP from Hurray for the Riff Raff (aka Bronx-born, New Orleans-based singer/songwriter Alynda Segarra) and it's mega. The band has always strung around Alynda's AMAZING vocals, but there is something here about the drive and production that is pretty special. Intimate but propulsive, it really is one to check out.

Everything Was Forever is the first new album in five years from Sea Power and one stacked full of all the glorious tones that have made them such national treasures. Released on their own Golden Chariot Records, it is simply euphoric. They have long been the sort of band that can control euphoria like a kite in the wind, but this new set is just magnificently paced, a beautiful collection and a really joyous album experience. You all know that we are firm fans, but this really is a fantastic addition to one of the finest rock and roll discographies in recent times.

+ Available on an exclusive Blue colour vinyl pressing.
Khruangbin & Leon Bridges - Texas Moon

Modern Studies return on Fire Records with We Are There and it is a melancholic beauty. They write careful and beautiful songs that gather pace and always shimmer with joy like rays of sunlight. Love them.

+ Available on a limited Orange vinyl pressing.

White Lies return in epic form with their sixth studio LP, As I Try Not To Fall Apart. Looks like the indie LP format sold through, but hopefully more due next week. Some pretty big euphoria herein.

Londoner's HÆLOS release the Somnum EP and it really is beautiful. Meditations based around sleep (and lack of) with really stunning sonics and production that really evolves across each track. Worth pointing out that Friday 18th March is World Sleep Day.

Luke Pretty returns as Tennyson with Rot, his first LP for Counter. Often frenetic beat making, with some really drenched production and his elastic vocals stealing the show. Limited white vinyl pressing.

Third Man partner up with Bobby Weir and his Wolf Bros to release Live In Colorado, a collection of songs recorded at the band's 2020 live performances at the historic Red Rocks Park Amphitheatre in, Colorado and the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in Colorado.

+ We have a very handsome pressing on "Big River Blue / Weight of Gold" colour vinyl.

As we mentioned last week, Eve Adams' absolutely gorgeous Metal Bird is now shipping, last few Dinked Editions online too.

Last one to flag up today is Structure, the fifth studio LP from Brooklyn electro-pop duo Water From Your Eyes. It is a very hard one to summarise succinctly. They move through genres and tone quite a bit, but there is just such a good energy going on. Lots of ambience against the electro-clash and strangely traditional pop songs. Really highly recommended.

Lots of killer reissues up on the site too from; Los Campesinos!, Joe Henderson, Lee Morgan, Jamie T, Nina Simone, Robert Johnson and The Twilight Sad.

☔ Take care out there!
