Records of the Week

Records of the Week: M(h)aol, Bonobo, Cat Power, dvr, Richard Fearless and Fazer.

Records of the Week and a very handsome new set for your considerations.

Hello, Friends.

Record of the Week is Gender Studies, the short, (not) sweet and perfectly formed debut release from Irish Post-Punks M(h)aol. It was recorded in just 3 days, and covers topics such as violence against women, the misogynistic music scene in Ireland and the UK, and trying to navigate life when you're not a cis straight white man. This blew us inside out. Raw, urgent and vital music. Absolutely fantastic stuff. Our Dinked Edition sold out, but we do have OG Black vinyl which is relatively limited in-itself.

One of the week's big returns is Fragments, the expansive new LP from Simon Green as Bonobo. Everything from the production, through to the pacing and especially the artwork is just so luxe. Guest appearances from Jamila Woods, Joji, Kadhja Bonet, Jordan Rakei, O’Flynn and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. A really great headspace.

+ Deluxe edition LPs are pressed on crystal clear vinyl and includes four art prints and a pretty stunning lenticular sleeve.
+ Indies are pressed on red marble vinyl.
+ CDs include a fold out poster.

Chan Marshall returns as Cat Power with her new album Covers, her third collection of celebrated reinterpretations of songs by classic and contemporary artists. Reimagining; Frank Ocean, Bob Seger, Lana Del Rey, Jackson Browne, Iggy Pop, The Pogues, Nick Cave, The Replacements and more. She really is in fine voice here, skilfully taking each song in new direction.

+ Indie LPs are pressed on Gold vinyl.

Plex is the third LP from Munich quintet Fazer. Part composed and part improvised with double-drummer polyrhythmic grooves and dub-like bass-lines. It feels like one of those albums we're going to play again and again over here.

+ Indie LPs are pressed on Crystal Clear vinyl.

Dirty Tapes is the new EP from the much-hyped dvr. Wry and darkly funny, the production is so wonky it sounds like it's going to fall to pieces at any moment, and that's pretty exciting. 100% one to watch.

Monodrama (three musicians from Madrid) are hard ones to explain. Mndrmooaa is somewhere between ambient, jazz, cosmic and kraut. It really is deliciously dark, we've been getting well stuck in. Limited pressing on double clear vinyl.

Dodging Dues is the new free-flowing LP from New Jersey sextet Garcia Peoples. Produced by Matt Sweeney, it's their most airy release to date. Dreamy vibes.

Christf**ker is the new LP from Austin post-hardcore band Portrayal of Guilt. It is so anti-chill, the sound of absolute grief. This really is an amazing listening experience.

Also this week, Mute release Daniel Blumberg's original score for Mona Fastvold’s critically acclaimed film, The World To Come.

We're expecting the following trio to drop very shortly too, we'll talk more about them when they're here:

Orlando Weeks - Hop Up
Blood Red Shoes - Ghosts On Tape
Elvis Costello - The Boy Named If

Lastly this week, Future Rave Memory is the new LP from Richard Fearless and it is absolutely immense. Heady and dark ambient music at it's very best, slowly unfolding and looping. The production is just amazing, pin-sharp and utterly maximal. Very highly recommended.
