Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Mogwai, Grandaddy, The Hold Steady and Dinked Editions from Michael Price, Cassandra Jenkins and Psymon Spine.

Navigating the last set of newness at the end of a really full-on week.

Hello, Friends.

There are epic returns, then there are Mogwai-sized epic returns! Glasgow's finest sons release As The Love Continues, their tenth studio album (not including soundtracks, live and comps) and it rather brilliantly has a bit of everything that they do. Our Record of the Week has the pensive and doomy builds of their soundtrack work and the clattering walls of noise that they debuted nearly twenty-five years back. It's a real grower and there is much to discover in both the whispers and in the wails.

+ Available on a limited Indie Shop Yellow vinyl pressing.
+ Order the album now at Drift and we'll enter you into the hat to win a test pressing.

From the very first few gestures, this one is a heartbreaker. Jason Lytle has revisited Grandaddy's quote wonderful The Sophtware Slump.... on a Wooden Piano! The plan was huge and epic studios, the result is as intimate as it gets in his apartment. His voice sounds amazing and it's such a bittersweet joy hearing the songs so unwound and primitive. We absolutely love this.

+ Super limited indie LP is pressed on cloudy clear vinyl.

Michael Price

My word it's been quite the week as Dinked. Absolute record-fast sellers from White Flowers, Iceage and Field Music, but there is more! In the building we have three new albums this week that we loved being involved in.

Firstly, Michael Price's quite amazing Eternal Beauty Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is here. The splatter is ever so slightly different to what we first projected, but it's just the most entrancing thing, you wait till it spins! Such a beautiful one this and a reminder that our Dinked Edition (73) also includes a hand-signed and numbered risograph.

Charismatic Megafauna is the sophomore record from Brooklyn electronic pop outfit Psymon Spine. A real shimmer to the production, plenty of NYC grooves in there. We've managed to make a last few Dinked copies available here.

Dinked no. 90 is the sublime new record from Cassandra Jenkins (Purple Mountains; Craig Finn; Lola Kirke collaborator). Softly sung and spoken word meets lusciously crunchy beats and full guitar tones. Lots of space in the record, it has a certain jazz quality in that way, it's all beautiful constructed and her voice really is lush. Again, last few copies online now here.

Grandaddy

The Hold Steady return with - Open Door Policy - their 8th full length studio album this week. We actually just sold out, but watch this space, we'll try and source more.

Yet another big return, with Tindersticks releasing the minimal and rich sounding Distractions. Got a really lovely vibe to it, this.

+ Very limited indie LP is pressed on Dark Blue vinyl.

Also this week: lush, lo fi and super warm vibes from Whitney K with Two YearsXYZZY is the joyous and bonkers debut from a Dean Honer-led project called Another New Thing on Dipped In Gold Recordings (limited teal vinyl). Lael Neale releases her dreamy new LP Acquainted with Night on Sub Pop (get in quick for White vinyl). Ryan Hemsworth releases the super limited (on Coke Bottle Clear vinyl) Pout as part of the 'Friends of Jagjaguwar' series. Smith & Burrows reunite nine years on for Only Smith & Burrows Is Good Enough (a reminder that the CD is here, the LP is due at the end of April). Australian punks Vintage Crop release Serve To Serve Again on Upset The Rhythm, really made us miss loud sweaty rooms with jangled bodies. CD here, LP due shortly.

Domenique Dumont's wonderful People on a Sunday (an original soundtrack to the 1930 silent film variously known as Menschen am Sonntag, Les Hommes le Dimanche and People On Sunday) has finally landed on vinyl and sounds amazing! Limited mind, so don't admire it for too long without clicking!

Cool Dry Place is Katy Kirby’s long-awaited debut album on Keeled Scales and it's got a really great feel to it. Such a strong voice, you really get dragged in. A handsome pressing on Coke Bottle Clear vinyl too!

Goat

The Times EP presents a unique collection of songs, recorded by Neil Young at home during lockdown as part of the raw and personal, 'Fireside Sessions' series. CD debuted last year, but nice to have this one available on vinyl for the first time.

Another couple of belters in the Blue Note Tone Poet Audiophile Series, with Paul Chambers' Bass On Top and Lee Morgan's The Rajah

Lastly this week, a really lush anniversary pressing of Goat's Requiem on Rocket Recordings. Tonally it was more focused on acoustic elements, but they created a one hell of a psychedelic din, glorious stuff and those swirls give us the chills.

Do get stuck in.
