Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Rozi Plain, Belle and Sebastian, James Yorkston, Nina Persson & The Secondhand Orchestra, MOLLY and Gaz Coombes.

Today feels very much like the starter pistol has fired. Let’s light up 2023.

Hello, Friends.

A bountiful week for you and your stereo with a great selection of new music, headed up by THREE custom Dinked Editions.

Rozi Plain returns this week with a set of genuinely mesmerising new songs on Prize. Her hypnotic and calming vocals are instantly recognisable, sitting at the top of dense layers of sonics. Created with a vast and varied set of contributors, it’s testament to her creative vision that it all sounds so focused. A really great listen and plenty to discover each time you get lost in its haze.

+ Available on indie exclusive ‘Invisible’ colour vinyl.

James Yorkston
has again collaborated with Swedish collective The Secondhand Orchestra, this time also adding the guest vocals of Nina Persson of The Cardigans. The Great White Sea Eagle is such a masterclass in making delicate, focused and ornate music whilst avoiding sounding stuffy. There is real life to it, a spontaneity that feels like they captured performances as they were only just being realised through all the collective minds. Really inspiring stuff.

+ Available on exclusive Dark Green colour vinyl.

Shopping the racks

Picturesque is the second LP from Austrian duo MOLLY. It’s a rare thing to find a band that doesn't really sound much like anyone else, but the pair have managed to bring in elements of dream pop and post rock and really create some fresh euphoria. It’s music to get lost in, an exultant drive and scope. We’ve listened to it loads as we proudly worked with Sonic Cathedral on the Dinked release, but it really is one we’ve gone back to a lot. Great stuff.

+ Available on exclusive Sea Foam colour vinyl.

Okay, ready? We are going to add one or two last copies of each of the Dinked Editions in stock, now!

Only announced earlier this week and hitting the racks this very new music Friday, Late Developers is the twelfth album from Glasgow’s pop institutions Belle and Sebastian. It was recorded during the sessions for 2022’s A Bit of Previous album and shares the same exuberant energy, whilst bringing in both more ornate and big poppin’ moments. Very them, very good!

+ Available on Indie exclusive Clear Orange colour vinyl.

Turn The Car Around is the new solo LP from Supergrass’ Gaz Coombes and his voice, in particular, sounds exceptional. He’s one of the finest voices of the last few decades, but the way he has grown and changed it is really impressive. It’s an expansive set with gestures towards all of the things in his fine back catalogue, it also has a grandness to it that rings to an artist confident in where he’s going. Really good.

+ Available on Indie Exclusive Opaque Cream colour vinyl.

CACTI is the highly anticipated second studio album from Bristol-based songwriter Tor Maries as Billy Nomates. It’s another corking vocal delivery, she’s retained the rawness of her debut but the production wraps around her voice as a thick and driving central force. Bold but vulnerable, there is a lot going on.

+ Available on Indie Exclusive Clear colour vinyl.

Gaz Coombes - Turn The Car Around

Strays is the hugely impressive new LP from American singer-songwriter Margo Price. It was produced with Jonathan Wilson and really is another bold step into psychedelic country. Great songs and the confidence to take them into weird creative canyons.

+ Pressed on Shrimp Pink colour vinyl.

Get Real is The long-awaited debut record from one of Wales' finest new bands, CVC (or Church Village Collective in full). Feet in both big country vibes and woozing Welsh pop, they really do have something going on. It sounds full of the brashness of a young band, but the production really is impressive.

+ Available on exclusive Yellow colour vinyl.

Liela Moss
returns this week with her new Internal Working Model LP on Bella Union. A gloriously mixed bag with addictive pop hooks and much darker timbres sitting in great balance.

+ Available on limited Red colour vinyl.

We had an arrival that we’d totally forgotten about this week too, with Nathan Salsburg’s Landwerk No.3 on No Quarter. It is the third volume of the Landwerk series from the guitarist, archivist and 78 collector, a graceful and really beautiful set.

Lastly this week, Never Going Under is the fifth album from Liverpool’s Circa Waves. The band were scheduled to be joining us for an intimate launch show but have had to postpone (until early March). Pensive moments and upbeat bangers.

+ Available on exclusive White colour vinyl.
+ Order now to receive a bonus flexi disc.

A wild set of reissues for you too (we’ll discuss them more on Monday), including; Bell Orchestre, Fela Kuti, Alabama Shakes, The xx, Love & Rockets and the AMAZING Cymande album.
