Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Plantoid, J Mascis, Soft Walls and The Last Dinner Party.

Pinch, punch, a svelte little bunch.

Hello, friends.

Welcoming you to February with a short but sweet set of new releases for the Friday racks.

Our first record of the week for February is Terrapath, the complex and progressive debut from Brighton-based quartet Plantoid. As many of you know, we worked with the band on a (long sold-out) Dinked Edition, so it’s an album we’ve played a lot over the last few months. Jazzy changes of time signatures, with crashing rhythms and riffs and vocal melodies that dance around like flames. The Terrapath (a massive half-vegetable, half-machine structure) watches on throughout and that gives it a delicious pomposity. A 39 minute trip that we love to keep taking.

+ Pressed on limited ECO vinyl.
J Mascis
What Do We Do Now is the new LP from J Mascis and it is big, full and warm like a winter jumper. The fifth solo LP from the Dinosaur Jr man has a great vibe, a sort of melancholic chug, but with some suitably face-melting guitar wails. It all started as acoustic meditations - before getting filled out in the studio to become big band bangers - and it places ever more weight on his voice; which sounds fantastic.

+ Available on limited Neon Pink ‘Loser Edition’ vinyl.
+ We have some double sided 12” prints to give away with the LP too.

You are cordially invited… as they say! Prelude To Ecstasy is the much-anticipated debut LP from BBC ‘Sound of’ champions and BRIT Rising Star Award winners The Last Dinner Party. It’s one of them albums and they are one of them bands that you’ll be hearing a lot about this year. Some great pop songs, really tight production, some naughty lyrics, a great set of outfits, you can see the appeal. When it’s fun, it’s really good fun. Good on them.

+ Available on Limited Ox Blood Red Colour Vinyl.

Lastly this week, True Love is the new LP from Soft Walls. We’ve been a big fan of all of Dan Reeves’ output (as Soft Walls and Cold Pumas) and this one is a really rich jangler too. Maudlin shades, but plenty of sunshine in the riffs and his whispered vocals get a real groove going. Really, really good stuff.

Reissues include two killer compilations under Numero’s Eccentric Soul banner, with The Shoestring Label and The Forte Label. We have a 50th Anniversary Edition of Paul McCartney & Wings’ Band On the Run, also Blue Mitchell, Joe Lovano, Knxwledge and the simply essential Eastern Sounds from Yusef Lateef.
