Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Plastikman & Chilly Gonzales, Confidence Man, Hannah Peel & Paraorchestra, Crows, Phi-Psonics, Field Works and Carmen Villain.

Okay. No beating around the bush, there are loads and you'll want many of them.

Hello, Friends.

Record of the Week for the last time in March (although, as all the pedants will point out it is officially released tomorrow which is indeed April) is something of a masterpiece reworking of a masterpiece. Consumed In Key is a reimagining of Plastikman's 1998 magnum opus 'Consumed', transformed as a new collaborative composition between original artist Richie Hawtin (aka Plastikman) and musical genius Chilly Gonzales. Regular readers will know that we just loose it every time for the maestro Chilly (join us) but this amazing triple LP set really does warrant the raving. The tones of the piano, the subtle builds, it is absolutely masterful.

+ Available on a limited Indie exclusive pressing on triple White vinyl.

Tilt is the jacked-up, super-fun second LP from Brisbane pop royalty Confidence Man. Whilst retaining the fun of their debut LP, Tilt is unapologetically filled with absolute bangers, a relentless set of dancefloor-friendly anthems and, well, supreme confidence! The focus has subtly moved more onto Janet Planet (who sounds incredible) and she glimmers.

+ Available on a limited Blue colour vinyl pressing.

Hannah Peel & Paraorchestra - The Unfolding

A Dinked Double this new release week and a pair of absolute crackers.

Firstly, Emmy and Mercury Prize nominee, Sea Change alumna, broadcaster and all-round beacon of musical excellence Hannah Peel collaborates with the virtuoso players of Paraorchestra on The Unfolding. It really is a remarkable set, soothing and inspiring with the swooping orchestrations and incredibly evocative synths and gestures towards systems music. Also, Victoria Oruwari's vocal is just overwhelming. A truly wonderful listening experience. The Unfolding is a work of high art.

+ Our Dinked Edition sold out, but we do have a very limited exclusive pressing on double Fluorescent Orange colour vinyl.

Beware Believers is the new LP from London four-piece Crows and it really is mega. Raucous and life affirming post-punk very much in their own mould. It's full of snarling and quite brooding energy, but the propulsive element makes it feel ever more euphoric in spite of the boiling blood.

We have a couple of spare Dinked Editions and some of the fantastic Indie Exclusive on the site... Now!

So two new albums out there in the world and we've JUST announced our third new release of the week with Kelley Stoltz's absolutely fantastic new (seventeenth!) LP, The Stylist. Honoured to have Kelley join the double-Dinked gang. The 'Butterfly' press LP looks amazing and he has also made us a double 7" single too!

Phi-Psonics is a meditative, immersive instrumental group from Los Angeles, led by bassist Seth Ford-Young and featuring Sylvain Carton on woodwinds, Mitchell Yoshida on electric piano, and Josh Collazo on drums. Tell you what, this one has really got us all going nuts at Drift. Such a great vibe, spiritual flows and lush ambience. The Cradle was originally self-released on a very limited run, but Matthew Halsall (of Gondwana Records) discovered them online when he was looking for music for his Worldwide FM show. Very highly recommended.

+ Now available on a full pressing, including a very handsome double Clear vinyl edition.

Hardly shocking news, but the new Field Works album is absolutely mint! Stations asks 'What does the Earth sound like?', with lush meditations and an all-star ensemble of guest vocalists and instrumentalists, including Hanna Benn, Janie Cowan, Masayoshi Fujita, Stuart Hyatt, Laraaji, Qasim Naqvi, and Brad Weber. Another release you just have to hear.

Alabaster DePlume returns this week with the excellent Gold LP on the increasingly essential International Anthem Recording Co. label. The balance is really beautiful. His voice sounds amazing and his trademark saxophone adds warm tones to everything it touches. Lush.

+ Indie 2LPs are pressed on "eye of the sun" colour vinyl and the gold foiling to the sleeve is pretty jaw-dropping.

Going head-to-head with Alabaster this week for most stunning disc is Twilight Sequence with Trees in General: and the Larch via Castles in Space. As they perfectly explain, it is a 'writhing, groaning slo-mo vortex of analogue modular synth music'.

+ A semi-opaque 12" with an etched B-side. It really does look pretty magic.

Also this week; Psychic Graveyard and Usa Nails combine forces on the excellent Split. The LPs are pressed on random colour vinyl. Unlearning is the debut from Glasgow’s much-hyped Walt Disco. Our Indie LPs are pressed on "Moon Phase" colour vinyl and housed in a gate-fold sleeve with a bonus flexi-disc. New Meaning is the new LP from NYC low-lit synth-poppers Tempers.  Red Hot Chilli Peppers rope John Frusciante and Rick Rubin back in for the band's all-new Unlimited Love. We have Red vinyl copies.

Few bits that we previously mentioned were en-route are now in the building, including; Vae Vobis, the new LP from French synth trio Zombie Zombie. Really great tones. Guerilla Toss' gloriously squelchy Famously Alive on Sub Pop. Beulah Spa is an exotic psych-pop odyssey from Noon Garden (a member of Flamingods). Portland duo Reptaliens release Multiverse via Captured Tracks

Lastly today - and do not miss this - Only Love From Now On is a hugely impressive record full of warm ambient tones and imaginative field recordings from The US-born, Norwegian-Mexican musician and producer Carmen Villain. Absolute vibes, been playing this loads.

An excellent stack of Beat New Reissues to discuss next week (all hitting the shop tomorrow) from; MF DOOM, Beirut, The Cults Percussion Ensemble, The SilvertonesCan and more.
