Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Steam Down, Flying Lotus, Public Service Broadcasting, The Rugged Nuggets, and Angel Olsen.

If you're in the mood for a listen, we're in the mood for a natter.

Hello, Friends.

For no good reason other than that we're off to the pub early to celebrate the birthdays of Ray Charles, John Coltrane and Bruce Springsteen, welcome to a very full, but slightly more svelte than normal edition of Records of the Week.

After years of building a community and bringing a melting-pot of London scenes to the world's stage, Five Fruit is the excellent full debut from collective Steam Down. Much like the famous club nights, it's expressive, surprising and just a full-on euphoric experience through genres, style and pace. Record of the Week.

+ We have a limited Clear vinyl pressing.

The high lord Flying Lotus takes us to Feudal Japan, my word! Yasuke is the rich and dynamic soundtrack to the Netflix six-episode anime series. The percussion is lush, natural tones against the sensitively delivered eastern influences.

+ Pressed on Red vinyl. Super-nice Obi strip too.

Colemine Records (fast becoming one of our favs) release Odds & Ends, the super-chill, good-vibe cruiser from The Rugged Nuggets, featuring members of Orgone and Jungle Fire. Swooning strings, breezy guitars and tough as nails drums... We just need the sun back.

+ We have Indie LPs on Opaque White vinyl.

Steam Down - Five Fruit

Destiny Waiving is the new collaborative album from electronic producer Ulrich Schnauss and The Engineers guitarist Mark Peters. Warm analogue hues and lovely incendiary flashes. We have just this minute put the last few Dinked Edition copies online.

Bright Magic is the huge return of Public Service Broadcasting. Got some good Motorik chugs and some epic atmospherics.

+ Available in a limited gatefold sleeve, 20 page 12” x 12” booklet, download card and orange/black marbled vinyl.

Multi-instrumentalist Mara Simpson releases her new LP In This Place and it's a really beautiful listen. She came and played a set last week with her band and very kindly signed CD/LP copies for us.

Also this week; Angel Olsen's Aisles cover's EP, Colleen Green's excellent new Cool LP on Hardly Art, Knopperz from super-producer Dave OkumuCaleb Landry Jones' brilliantly psychedelic Gadzooks Vol. 1 on Sacred Bones, singer-songwriter Tom Speight's Everything's Waiting for You, straight-up all-good vibes with Teenage Dreams from Native Soul on Awesome Tapes From Africa, Bess Atwell's new Already, Always LP, How Beautiful Life Can Be is the debut LP from the much-hyped The Lathums and Brittany Howard's Jaime Reimagined, which is filled with guests and some pretty thrilling new directions.

Lots of those editions are on limited colour vinyl, so have a nice browse.

LP formats just arriving from The Joy Formidable and Anna Phoebe, expect more to appear before the weekend.

Lastly in the new section we have Do Nothing's 'Zero Dollar Bill' and 'Glueland' EP's compiled as The EPs. Tell you what; they're bloody great, this lot.

The Rugged Nuggets - Odds & Ends

Assuming normal service resumes on Friday (which remains highly contentious), there are a swell batch of Not-New Records of the Week to tell you about, including; DJ Shadow's all-time EndtroducingMac McCaughan of Superchunk, Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage, a couple of bangers from the Charles Mingus vaults, heavy riffs from Pixies, Black Sabbath and Sleep and two superb compilations with Don Letts selecting for Late Night Tales and I'll Be Your Mirror: A Tribute To The Velvet Underground & Nico.

We'll tell you more...
