Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Yard Act, Jake Xerxes Fussell, Boris, Hania Rani, Boy Harsher and Silverbacks.

An excellent set of new releases for the walls, racks, shelves and stereos.

Hello, Friends.

Record of the Week is Good And Green Again, the absolutely glorious return of Georgia's Jake Xerxes Fussell. His fourth LP is produced by James Elkington and features guest players including Casey Toll, Libby Rodenbough, Joe Westerlund and Bonnie “Prince” Billy. It is an absolute masterclass in pastoral bliss; nostalgic, sad, uplifting and expansive songs that he delivers with effortless warmth. This is absolutely the album we needed this week, a beauty.

Turning things up past eleven if we may, W is the splendid return of the iconic Japanese experimental noise rockers Boris. Whereas many of their previous albums (especially 2020's No) have been based in frenetic riffs, here it is much slower, almost heavy ambience. There is such a richness to this first album in partnership with Sacred Bones Records, it's about as close as anyone has got to mbv in a very long time. Highly Recommended.

+ Available on a very limited Sea Blue colour vinyl pressing.

The Overload is the highly-anticipated debut from Leeds' Yard Act. Routed in a fine tradition of UK post-punks, it's quite a lot funnier than the first singles would suggest, which also makes the bleaker bits even more punching. It's disarming in that way.

To celebrate the release of the album, the band have created an exclusive lyric print for each of the eleven tracks on the album. Drift are one of the eleven shops lucky enough to have them, with exclusive prints of album closer "100% Endurance". We'll be putting them into all LP orders as of now. You can also come and see us for them (whilst stocks last).

+ The very limited Indies Exclusive LP is pressed on (Ghetto Lettuce Edition) Transparent Green Vinyl. We just heard this is sold-out now at source, so dive in whilst we have them.

Yard Act

Our January Record of the Month is released this week, with Archive Material from the (mostly) Dublin-based art-rock quintet Silverbacks. We posted a few videos last week that you can watch here, really hyped for you all to dive into this excellent record. With big plaudits at Stereogum and Bandcamp, they are clearly ones to watch and Archive Material feels very much like an album that will be a big part of our year. 😉

We have a limited Blue vinyl edition in the shop now and any of you who ordered the (sold out) Dinked Edition, we're hoping to have them shipping out Friday for you.

Boy Harsher

The Runner is dark and stylish soundtrack vibes from the duo Boy Harsher. They put together an amazing package for us as a Dinked Edition and you'll be delighted to learn that we can make our last handful of copies available.

+ Dinked Edition 154
+ 140g Crystal Clear / Blood Red Marble vinyl *
+ ’The Runner’ exclusive movie poster designed by midnight-marauder.com
+ Hand-numbered sleeve *
+ Limited pressing of 500 *

Another former Dinked Edition is the collaborative La Planète Sauvage from Stealing Sheep and The Radiophonic Workshop. The re-imagined soundtrack to René Laloux’s celebrated 1973 sci-fi animation La Planète Sauvage (Fantastic Planet) really is a treat and we're delighted to have a double Black vinyl repress on the shelves as of today!

We thought we had long sold out, but we're going to have another few copies of Hania Rani Live from Studio S2 on limited edition Clear vinyl. She really is in fine form, vocally especially.

After a little bit of a delay, we have the eponymous Model Man debut LP with us this week and it's a right banger for cold Januarys. A loving and personal tour-de-force through UK garage and jungle.

HIFILOFI SCIFIWIFI is the debut solo album from Gale P, best known as the co-founder, guitarist and occasional singer of acoustic-indie stalwarts Turin Brakes.

Butterfly 3001 is the first remix album from the prolific King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. A seriously impressive list of contributors (Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, DJ Shadow, Hieroglyphic Being), but it's the changes of pace and direction that really makes this a winner. Damn, this could double their output!

Also this week we have three pretty massive returns that will be hitting the charts, with; Palace on Fiction, Years & Years on Polydor Records and Miles Kane via BMG. All three of them include limited colour vinyl pressings so do get involved as none of them will last long.

Jake Xerxes Fussell

Lastly today, we finally have copies of Penelope Isles' absolutely glorious new LP, Which Way To Happy. The band came and played at Drift on Wednesday night and hand-delivered a few boxes of limited White vinyl, which they kindly signed for us! The Dinked Edition will follow shortly, we know that lots of you are still waiting on that one.

Which Way To Happy really is a treat, dark and introspective moments but their musicality and rich sonics make for such a euphoric experience.

A great weekful, dive in folks.
