Best New Reissues

Best New Reissues: Steve Reid, Missing Brazilians, Joni Mitchell, Muslimgauze, Kenny Burrell and Grant Green.

Welcome to another new week from behind the counter at Drift.

Hello, Friends.

We’re talking Best New Reissues today with some excellent new (but not-new) releases for your consideration.

Firstly today; Soul Jazz Records re-release Odyssey Of The Oblong Square, the rarest of deep heavyweight jazz by the iconic Steve Reid and The Master Brotherhood. The six-piece (with Reid behind the drums) build up some incredible rhythms and the horns really scream, it’s a gloriously out-there set. Released originally on Reid’s own Mustevic Sound record label, this is a rare and captivating thing.

+ Available on limited Gold Colour vinyl.

A Science fiction Dancehall classic! Warzone is a rhythmic collision of noise, dub and electronics from Missing Brazilians, the collaborative forces of Adrian Sherwood and On-U co-founder Kishi Yamamoto. Features vocal contributions from Shara Nelson (Massive Attack) and Annie Anxiety (Crass Records).

Honestly, this one is a trip.

All-time iconic, Blue is the fourth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. Although her debut LP Song to a Seagull, the following Clouds and especially the directly-proceeding Ladies of the Canyon has all won many admirers and huge plaudits, Blue brought even more emotional weight and is one of the defining albums of the era. Still sounds bruised, an album that should be in every collection.

+ Available on Transparent colour vinyl.

Muslimgauze was the hugely enigmatic project from Mancunian artist Bryn Jones and we’ll confess to not really knowing a great deal about it until a little earlier this year. He sadly died in 1999 and his back-catalogue fell even further into the shadows and out of public consciousness. Available this week for the first time in ages is 1993’s Veiled Sisters and it really is a spooky and enthralling listen. Such textural music, a genreless path through ambient atmospheres.

+ Available on limited Opaque Gold colour vinyl.

Blue Note

A Blue Note Tone Poet guitar double this week with two fantastic releases (aren’t they always though?)

The self-titled album from Kenny Burrell is such a joy. It rolls with such a graceful bounce and his licks are just like bolts of light. We had no idea that the sleeve illusion was by Andy Warhol.

Feelin' The Spirit is the Blue Note debut from Grant Green, interpretations of spirituals with an unbelievable lineup including Herbie Hancock on piano, Butch Warren on bass, Billy Higgins on drums plus Garvin Masseaux on tambourine.

Both albums are mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analogue master tapes, pressed on 180 Gram vinyl at RTI and packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket. Delicious, to be totally honest with you.

Also today, we have a limited pressing of Exorcising Ghosts, the David Sylvian-led Japan best of. Lastly, we have the second volume of Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros’ Live In Colorado. This Third Man edition includes a very handsome (and exclusive) Green & Red colour vinyl pressing.
