Records of the Week

Bon Iver, Dead Pioneers, Tara Nome Doyle, Daughter of Swords, Cold Specks and Julian Cope.

We know that Saturday is The Big Saturday, but tomorrow is actually a pretty damn good edition of new music Friday, you know…

SABLE, fABLE is the fifth studio album from Bon Iver and it might be his most Bon Iver-ish one yet. He sings in a rich baritone and also a soaring falsetto, both with and without those little vocoder flashes. The mood is plaintive, but also really quite joyous and full of optimism. We stuck him on a couple of times this week and different bits resonated; it feels like one of those albums that will sound slightly different each time you listen to it.

+ Available on exclusive double Black & Pink colour vinyl.

PO$T AMERICAN is the second full-length album by Dead Pioneers and it hits hard. Vocalist Gregg Deal is ludicrously charismatic, a flow of cultural commentary, stand-up observations and righteous anger across the top of hardcore and post-punk. Poignant, darkly funny and so vital right now.

+ Available on Crystal Clear colour vinyl.

Berlin-based, Irish-Norwegian artist Tara Nome Doyle releases her third studio LP, Ekko. Her voice is full of fragile beauty, and the production is gorgeously stripped-back to flow around her. Very pretty.

+ Available on Clear/Transparent colour vinyl.

Alex is the debut LP from North Carolina singer-songwriter Alex Sauser-Monnig as Daughter of Swords. We are big fans of her Mountain Man band - and you can hear her lush vocal tones - but this one has such a pop energy. Recorded at Sylvan Esso’s studio, it bubbles and whips around with great invention. Enjoying this one muchly.

Also in the mix this week, Cold Specks returns on Mute with the swooping Light for the Midnight. We have just a couple of Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan’s Overspill Estates if you’re quick. Lastly, the magnificent Julian Cope releases his all-new (possibly 37th solo album) Friar Tuck. It’s all very ‘up’, a swirl of hilarious observations and ingenious tones. Love him!

We promise to write a little more about the week’s Best New Reissues at some point, but you won’t want to miss out on; Kali Malone’s sublime The Sacrificial Code. Just For a Day, Souvlaki and Pygmalion from Slowdive. In Spring and On The Turning Ground from the absolutely scorching Tara Clerkin Trio. Time for a Witness and Only Life from iconic American rock band The Feelies. AND… Numero have compiled 28 Demos from Margo Guryan. Available on exclusive Sun Red colour vinyl and absolutely essential stuff!
