For this Sunday classic we’re only going back a decade or so - a contemporary classic - to celebrate Austin Peralta’s Endless Planets.
Originally released on 7th February 2011 through the mighty Brainfeeder label, Endless Planets is the final set from the young piano prodigy, who tragically died at 22 years old, just a year or so after the album’s release. It’s such a special release for us at Drift as, in so many ways, it lit the touch paper for Brainfeeder progressing into not only Jazz, but into fully following wherever the path goes. Endless Planets is and remains an album that really turned us on.
Back in 2011, Brainfeeder releasing an album from a young jazz player was huge. Although they are synonymous these days - and especially over here at Drift - as being real Jazz vanguards, with Kamasi Washington, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Thundercat on the books (amongst many others, folks), Endless Planets was such a firm marker of intent. They were really flying the jazz flag on this one and they did it early. Austin Peralta was the son of legendary Z-Boy skater Stacy Peralta. A genuine prodigy, Peralta was awarded the Shelly Manne New Talent Award by the Los Angeles Jazz Society (from Quincy Jones no less) at just 12 years old, releasing his first albums around the age of 15. 
His magnum opus, Endless Planets, is such a thriller. It feels dorky to say, but there is a real precociousness, you can feel a tangible sense of excitement as the young group roll through post-bop jazz, subtle latin influences and - in what would become a Brainfeeder hallmark - electronic gestures too. What we didn't realise until this reissue is that the album was recorded in a single day; Endless Planets is the vibe of a session recorded forever. There is plenty or ferocity, but also so much space as you feel the cosmos above you slowly shift.
