Drift Sunday Digest: 17th January 2021

Making beeps, bootlegging and a Shameful live stream.

Hello, Friends.

We've mentioned home schooling on our socials a few times this week and a surprising number of you got in touch. I think we accidentally started a support group. If you haven't been involved yet, the cheatsheet notes are 'it's relentless and very hard work indeed'. Although one of the main aims (besides surviving) is ideally reducing screen-time whilst keeping young people engaged, we got tipped off about Chrome Music Lab and it really is a great step in the right direction.

Essentially, it's a suite of simple and fun music making tools that should run in pretty much any browser and on any device. It's super simple and you really can do a lot. We've been working on a pretty tasty Blue Monday.

Whether you have young people or not, give it a go and we'll be accepting submissions.

Shame

On Tuesday 12th January, Shame will be broadcasting live for 12 hours on their YouTube channel and we want you involved! A big part of the day will see the band diligently signing and personalising an album for you.

So, what do you want it to say?

Bootleggins

We really like this project. Australian psych-rock institutions King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard launched an official bootlegger programme at the very end of 2020 and we're about to start seeing the fruits of their labour. They created a new section on their website called “Bootlegger” where they’ve uploaded the master recordings of nine albums and are encouraging anyone who’s interested to re-release them however they see fit.

A few years back they made their Polygondwanaland LP in the same way, which resulted in some excellent editions. Shout out to Static Caravan for the lathe cut version and Bear Tree Records in Sheffield who pressed it on a bonkers rainbow splatter if memory serves.

Up for preorder now we have 2019 live sets from Paris, Brussels and London, also a Demos: Volumes 1 & 2 double LP. Limited supply on them all and they are naturally pressed on pretty wild colours.

We're really excited to see what comes next.

Q. Who was it that was asking us about that bonkers K.G LP colourway?

Clarissa Connelly

Lastly this weekend, we got sent a record earlier this week that really knocked us sideways.

Clarissa Connelly is a musician from Scotland, currently living in Copenhagen. She has immersed herself in the local music scene there, and also in the local landscape and folklore which feed into her music and her quite wonderful The Voyager LP. If you like the idea of some 'Pagan Pop', you're going to go wild here. It's available online NOW via the usual streaming sites, we're also delighted to report that a pressing will be available in April on the CCM label.
