Records of the Week

Hank, Sister Ray Davies, HighSchool, Lazarus soundtracks, Kling Klang, EXTNDDNTWRK and Sister Irene O’Connor.

We are bookended by sisters and spatial vibes. Some choice cuts for you.

Firstly for this new week we have an exclusive Dinked Early Doors pressing of Twist Grip / Spiralic, the debut EPs from Hank, packed into a really super mini album. Rooted in London’s DIY scene and with a steady run of compelling singles and unpredictable live shows, the band have gained a reputation for being one of the best alternative acts in London right now.

All the way from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, the duo of Sister Ray Davies (Adam Morrow and Jamie Sego) really have delivered a treat on their debut, Holy Island. It's released on Sonic Cathedral and it undulates between fuzzed-out guitar dreams and some altogether more spooky timbres. Really engaging stuff.

+ We have limited ‘Lindisfarne Sky’ Blue & White colour vinyl.

HighSchool is the eagerly awaited self-titled debut from the Naarm/Melbourne post-punk duo HighSchool. Prickling grunge energy, with gothic rumbles and it’s all so pop-sensitive. Tense but also euphoric.

Kamasi Washington, Bonobo and Floating Points have all created a full-length soundtrack album for Lazarus, the new Adult Swim series from legendary Shinichirō Watanabe (the famed director behind Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and other cult classics.) We haven’t seen it, but these are real vibe creators, excited to dig in.

Wrong Speed Records release the new LP from the Liverpool experimental synth ensemble Kling Klang, and it really is a wallop. Half Life is somewhere between new wave and post punk, but with creepy and hypnotic motoriks. So catchy and absolutely a little bit nightmarish.

EXTNDDNTWRK is the enduring solo project of Andrew Fearn, who is more commonly recognised as one half of Sleaford Mods. Albus is way more atmospheric than the gritty bangers of his day job, subtle electronic minimalism that plays out like a soundtrack. A really focused mood.

Archenfield is the new LP from musicologist and sample collagist U on Lex. Just giving this a first proper play and the textures are pretty lush.

The brothers Russell of Overmono release a very limited 12” on XL, with their reimagining of High Contrast’s legendary drum & bass anthem If We Ever. Etched B-side looks dope, last few online now.

Lastly this week, in a rare change of lanes, we want to flag up Sister Irene O’Connor’s fantastic Fire of God’s Love reissue now rather than next week as it is crazy limited and just will not last. Legendary 1973 album by the Australian nun, with folk spirituals across organ hums, spidery electric guitar licks, drum machine boops and her angelic voice.
