After an eight-year gap, Canadian composer Kara-Lis Coverdale returned this year with three new albums, and all three have been genuinely spectacular.
She began in May with From Where You Came, a set of nocturnal transmissions, altered-state refinements, and vivid stories. This was followed at the end of the summer by her second album of 2025, the stirring and spacious A Series of Actions in a Sphere of Forever. As the days get colder and the light shifts into dim mornings and fast-fading afternoons, her third LP of the year, Changes in Air, feels especially affecting and is our November Record of the Month.
Composed, performed, and recorded alone in Marquette, Manitoba in 2019, the album was completed this year and concludes her trilogy on Smalltown Supersound. Changes in Air was adapted from a body of work originally intended as an installation at Skarven, a floating sauna in Oslo. Its five sections are built around electric organ, modular synthesis, and piano, drawing on natural elements — wood, water, and sun — as well as materials like glass and metal. Coverdale is well known for exploring the intersection of experimental electronics and minimalist traditions, and these pieces push further into slow-evolving sonics and shifting timbres.
Sitting somewhere between contemporary classical, jazz, and new age, Changes in Air is beautifully contemplative. Stately, slightly unnerving, melancholic, and quietly euphoric, it brings the trilogy to a thoughtful and deeply atmospheric close.
