Record of the Month: William Doyle - Springs Eternal

Now this one really packs a punch! February’s Record of the Month is William Doyle’s exhilarating new Springs Eternal album.

William is someone we’ve always had time for, from his earliest noises (and subsequent Mercury Prize nomination) under the name East India Youth, through his beautiful, self-released ambient works and his recent, dizzying solo albums. There is always so much of him as a person amongst the production.

Watch | “Surrender Yourself”

Springs Eternal might well be the most ambitious release he’s made yet. Eleven hugely creative songs with wildly inventive production, it’s very hard to tell how he is making all of the noises, but the sheer maximalism is really thrilling stuff. There are flashes of drive and there are so many minute and intimate little gestures too, it really is one to bathe in.

The album was co-produced with Mike Lindsay (Tunng, LUMP) at his MESS studio in Margate, and features contributions from musicians Alexander Painter, Genevieve Dawson and Brian Eno. Provoking, sensory and really uplifting, it’s an album that we’ve all fallen pretty hard for.
